arm swelling

Been a competitive swimmer most of my life. Very slow heart beat finally led to the pacemaker in 2008. Surgeon knew that I swam and encouraged me to go right back to it after healing. Been back swimming hard for 1 1/2 years. Lately, my right upper arm (pacer is on the right side)swells during practice to the point that my bicep looks like the Hulk's when practice is over. Have had two different types of scans to see what is going on. Everything looks OK and pacer and leads are fine. Doc thin...

Anyone w. a pacer controlled by sinus node?

I am about to receive a biventricular PM (CRT-P), and as far as we know, my own sinus node is functioning well and beats normally. It is my understanding it will then set the pace almost all the time, but pacing both ventricles to make sure they beat in sync. I have a Left Bundle Branch Block, which is why I need the PM.

I am confused about what I read about advanced rate responsive PMs, and upper and lower limits. When the sinus node is sending out beats normally, it should be the m...

Vibration Plate Exercise Machines

Hello All:
Here's hoping that 2010 is a good year for all.
My question is: Does anyone in the club use a Vibration Plate Machine as a form of exercise? Or has anyone been advised by their medical advisers as to whether or not to use them? And, if not, why? Any experiences would be greatly appreciated.
Best to all. Thanks

adapting to PM

I am 62 years young. One month ago I needed a PM. Heart was not getting electrical signals needed.
I have been an active runner for over 30 years. Mostly for fun and to stay in shape, but also run one or two marathons a year. This past year was tough to run. Now I am back to running. Run mostly foothill trails around the Wenatchee valley, where I live. Have built up to about 1 hour in length. At times, feel stronger and more relaxed than others. Question, have any of you who are active runn...

Well, my titanium buddy and I went skiing for the first time yesterday. We had a blast! It is so great to feel good and be able to live life to its fullest. For all of you newbies out there wondering if life ever gets better...it does! Hang in there!

I have lived in snow most of my life and never tried skiing before. I think I just found my winter sport!

Peace & love,

Juvenile Diabetic with active lifestlye

I’m 28 years old and have a VERY active lifestyle. I am also a Juvenile Diabetic (26yrs) and have an insulin pump. I have been diagnosed with sick sinus syndrome and have bradycardia mostly at night when I sleep. My cardiologist recommends that I get a pacemaker. I am pretty much ok with the idea. I already have the pump so I’m not really phased by having another electronic device hooked to me. I came on this site when I first found out that I needed a PM and was relived to see so many ac...

How soon may I exercise after a PM implant?

I had my PM installed 14th December. The first week was like hell, but I went to work each day and life is slowly coming back. I'll have my 2nd check at the hospital next week, and will ask for their advice on training and other things. But is there anybody with sports and exercise experience? I'm 63, very active and need a really good reason to take it easy the coming months!

Bicycling in aero position + PM?

Is there a problem with the normal PM position and bicycling in a typical aero/racing posture, where the upper body bent low and the arms forward to a handlebar positioned forward and low? Bad description, but bicyclists hopefully know exactly what I mean...

I am having a bivent PM implanted soon, and as I was training on my indoors rollers tonight, I realized perhaps a PM would be noticeable and in the way for such a bike riding posture..

Can any bicyclists help me out wit...

My son Jeremy and sports

My son Jeremy has had a pacemaker since the age of 3. He is now 16 years old and all male. He is the middle son of four children. Gorwing up I made a point to treat him just like the rest of his siblings. In all things but sports. His brothers played football and basketball while he is in band.
I have always told him he could do anything if he just put his mind to it. He even wrote a paper at school on this which made me cry. We only had a problem with this is middle school when he decided...

Activity after implant

I was looking over my files from after my implant and found some interesting info. I've posted my recollections a few times here, but found the real thing.

My discharge instructions from the hospital written by the cardiologist are "Regular walks, exercise at least 30 minutes 5 times a week. Do not lift left arm above shoulder until seen in the clinic in approximately 1 1/2 weeks. May remove sling after tomorrow. OK to shower after removing sling. Bandage will fall off in a few days"...

Snowboarding

Hey all! So I am 4 months post implant and I am starting to feel awesome again. I have been walking, eating right, drinking lots of water and generally feel way better than I did before the PM.

I just have a quick question. I was wondering how many people on here snowboard? I talked to my doc and she said I could only go if I found something to protect my PM. She didn't seem to concerned about me being only 4 months post implant or pulling a lead so I am thinking of heading out this w...

Playing the fiddle/violin with a PM

Hi

Just wondering if there are any experiences of others who play the violin. Most shoulder rests sit comfortably on top of the shoulder blade but are are fairly firm hard object and could damage PM or leads.

I am four months into implant of PM. Today I tried a pair of old woolen socks on the shoulder and left the rest off of the fiddle. It seemed to be ok with little pressure on the implant.

There are blow up and foam rests available also. Surely there are...

excersizing

hi, 2 yrs ago I had my mitro valve replaced with a machanical valve, after several weeks of going into afib after the surgery they decided to install a pace maker as well. Due to financial reasons I have not been able to keep going to my regular cardioligist, so I thought maybe some of you can answer some of my questions about excersizing.....Is it good for you to excersize? the reason I ask is because I thought the pace maker was suppose to keep the heart at a certain rate so is excersizing goo...

Given a choice of which PM...

I am scheduled to receive a CRT-P (biventricular) PM in January to improve my LV function, and I asked my EP/Cardio if I had a choice of model and brand. He wrote he would be comfortable with Boston Scientific, Medtronic, and St Jude, with St Jude having the advantage of daily wireless monitoring and data upload.

That's all he wrote, and I have been searching for which models he could have meant, and I was able to find only one St Jude, one Boston Sci. but no Medtronic CRT-P devices....

Santa is looking for a heart monitor...

Hello everybody! Hope everyone's in the holiday spirit :) I know I am. In fact, I finished most of my Christmas shopping early this year and left the best for last.

I wanted to get my friend a heart monitor watch. But what I thought would be relatively easy is turning out to be daunting task. I went to two places today, and the nicer models (all Polar) I was shown, come with the chest strap. My friend has an ICD (Medtronics) and I'm pretty sure we read somewhere that the chest strap...
