Pacemaker prevents heart failure?

I have a minor leaky mitral valve and think it may be causing my poor post-exercise recovery as well as shortness of breath when climbing hills (I like to hike). I have had a pacemaker for several years that I needed for sick sinus syndrome and absolute bradycardia and also have had a successful afib ablation. My question is it seems that a more serious mitral valve problem can cause heart failure, but doesn't a pacemaker protect against that? (Anyone know about if there is any relationship be...

Does your Defib move around?

Hi, I am new to the group. My story is that I went into vtac as I was riding my bike along the beach path here in Huntington Beach, California on 8/31/13. I had no clue what was wrong. No history of any heart trouble. I continued to ride for 4 miles to meet my riding buddy. I knew it was serious- we called 911. The EMT's were there in less than 5 min. They knew what was wrong. In less than 10 min they had given me amniodorone, and got my back to regular beats. I spent 3 days in cardiac care at H...

Pacemaker maxed out in 1st jog.

I got my dual lead pacemaker(Boston Scientific Advantio) Tues, Dec 03,2013 and with the exception of a few days with
pericarditis now feel pretty good and have been walking
5-6 miles per day. Yesterday at my wound check, the
PM nurse said I could start jogging with my sling. First
time around the block, I maxed out at 150 within a half
mile. What's that about? So the normal coordination that
existed between my lungs and heart before the PM is
gone. Anyone else...

Running

I just got a Medtronic pm last Sunday and am pretty unhappy about it. I am only 34 and have been diagnosed with SSS. I have had it for years, as well as a fib, but have only recently decided to deal with it. I enjoy running a lot and I also work in fire. I am worried that maybe my pm is set too low at 150. I have never used a heart rate monitor but according to the equation my max hr is 148. What happens if 150 is not high enough? The pm tech says 150 is high enough but after reading some posts...

Lifting weights and Weightlifting

My doctor told me that,I can't lift anything over 90lbs and 100lbs,I had 2 45lb olympic plate weights that equals 90lbs together,My doctor tells me,I would not lift those weights that equals 90lbs because it will crush the wire.I don't want to be like actor John Ritter(Jack Tripper) who died 10 years ago of a torn aorta inside his heart.I read that lifting heavy weights will have an impact on your heart and it will tear your aorta inside your heart.

Volleyball

I am just wondering if those who play volleyball have issues or concerns about getting hit in the area of the pacemaker. I did see that there is a shirt with a protective device that can be purchased on the internet, but my doctor said I could play volleyball and he did not mention protecting the device area. I am a female, but I play with males who hit the ball pretty hard - "A" players.

Drumming / Percussion

Hi,

We are to meet soon with cardiologist to discuss implanting pacemaker for (infrequent right now, but increasing) heart stoppage due to vasalvagal syncope. My 12 year old son lives for drumming and percussion. Anyone know if there are any limitations on this activity? Also for how long might he have to take a break after pacemaker is implanted? thanks for replies.

Pacemaker, Prior Clot and Martial Arts

Hi

Does anyone have any experience of learning martial arts after having a pacemaker implanted? I also have a history of blood clots and pacemaker wire was replaced in the first 6 months due to wire displacement. I'm not on warfarin but I do have clot remnants. I want to learn Krav Maga but I don't know whether or not this is safe - I've asked the instructor and they've said anyone can do it irrespective of fitness etc - but it is always more helpful to hear from people who actually...

Facing Adversity

Or - "Putting your money where your mouth is." Many times I have quoted Napoleon: "In Battle, the mental is to the physical as three is to one." I go on to say that the same is true in recovering from a PM/ICD implanting and learning how to live w/ you new little best friend forever. MOF, it is true for recovering from any significant medical condition/procedure.

Let me tell you of my experience this past week.

Every year I go deer hunting w/our #2 Son, Eric in north c...

Limit raised to 180 bpm

(Followup to previous post.)

4 weeks post implant, 55yr old male: I finally got my PM max bpm moved up to 180 bpm, despite my dr.'s reluctance. It was followed up with a stress test which showed no heart problems (we went up to 175 or so).

My initial max setting was 130. This I hit with just moderate exercise. Since my PM tracks atrial beats, when the atria exceeded 130 the PM would only pace every other beat -- effectively inducing 2:1 heart block. It took some pers...

Cycling - heart rate

Hello. Seven weeks ago I had a St. Jude pacemaker implanted because of slow heart rate. All is going well, and my doctor is permitting me to return to bicycling -- my favorite form of exercise, by far -- as of later this week.

My concern is that the motion detector in this device might not be able to detect my exertion while riding, and thus not give me enough bloodflow for long distance cycling. Unlike with running, tennis or other forms of exercise, the chest stays relatively stati...
