Investigation of diving experience of divers with implanted cardiac devices

Divers Alert Network (DAN) is conducting a research study about divers with an implanted pacemaker or defibrillators who are choosing to dive with or without medical clearance. The study consists of an on-line survey which takes about 10 minutes to complete plus a possible follow-up interview if additional clarification is needed.

Get Going

I got my pacemaker August 2, 2012. I read so much about taking it easy for up to three months and worrying about future activity levels. My Doctor is at the Cleveland Clinic so I think his recommendations should be pretty good. I got back on my exercycle within a week after implantation, of course slow to start with. I started back with light weights in about 3 weeks. Played my first round of golf in just a few days shy of 6 weeks, 9 holes the first day 18 two days later.

My Doc sugg...

Heart Rate Drop

I'm a 62 year old cyclist who recently had a pacemaker implanted after aortic valve surgery. When my heart rate reaches 160 BPM, the pacemaker quickly drops my rate below 100 BPM, making it very difficult to continue climbing a hill. I've had the Medtronic Techs adjust the settings and thought this problem was corrected. But it happened again last week on a very long uphill. Has anyone else experienced this.

am Ii to blame?

prior to having my pacemaker fitter a few weeks ago I spent a week of intense weight lifting with little cardio.Could I of possible over exercised my heart causing a block? My friends have said the weights I was lifting were to heavy but obviously that's their own opinion and to be honest I had never felt better in the week when I was lifting prior to my heart block.I have though about this everyday since I had the block and have convinced myself I caused my heart block by working my heart to har...

Pacemaker or not - that is the question!

Hi - I'm from the UK and my condition is that when my heart rate gets up to around 150 it starts missing every other beat and therefore only happens when I do strenuous exercise. I am a keen runner having completed the London marathon several times and have been told that if i want to carry on running I will need to have a pacemaker fitted. My cardiologist has told me that I don't need one if I don't run but it is possible that the condition is progressive and I may need one anyway in about 10...

EXERCISING

In response to Dorty--
I got my pacemaker the middle of August. Before the end of November, I was referred for cardiac rehab. I went for the evaluation and also visited the local YMCA (no membership charge through my health insurance). Cardiologist was thrilled with my decision to use the treadmill (which I started before holidays). I am going to make an appointment to be shown how to use the other cardio equipment. I also recently started water aerobics. Both are good workouts and I have s...

Target heart rate

Thank you, Bev, for your response...righto on max and target heart rate...I am hitting between 90-95 right now with no problems walking for 30 minutes...went to 105 one day with no problem. Before PM implant (Aug 2012), I often walked for two hours, and obviously am not in same shape I was then, but I wonder if my max rate might be higher than the 220 minus age equation (in my case--146). I suppose the only way to find out is by taking a stress test, correct? Thanks for the help.

HELP

A few days ago I had a double chamber PM fitted and am basically a bit in the dark about whether I will be able to return to a exercise regime.I've read so many conflicting opinions on the internet about what I will and won't be able to do after the first few months.I'm 32 an exercised regularly lifting weights and playing football.I understand the risks with playing contact sports but will I still be able to use my rowing machine and lifts weights after the initial 3 or 4 months of the operatio...

MV sensor problem - solved

A week or so ago I asked if anyone had experienced sudden and prolongued "collapses" in MV pacing rates from 160+ to around 90 bpm. I experienced this with my new biventricular PM which I had to have due to a reduced ejaction fracion of my left ventrical. The problem occurred when climbing hills while cycling - and this "collapse" I can tell you was a bit frightening.

Yesterday I had a follow-up check-up, and a Boston Scientific rep. was present. With her help, and with advice from he...

What to expect

I'm 2 months post op and am working everyday to get back into
a pre op condition. My pacemaker is set to a max. 150. Has anyone exceeded the max. and if so, what can I expect to feel if I do. I currently have a mental block about working too hard.

heavy weight lifting

Hello!
first time on here. I am 32 years old and just had a pacemaker fitted. I am 3 weeks out. After my 6 weeks of keeping my arm below my shoulder, i was told that i could return to activity. Before the PM i was in really good shape and weight lifted daily. Are there any lifts that I should stay away from? Bench press? Military press? I am very anxious to get back to normal. I am going crazy with this limited motion. Any feedback will help!

Heart Rate Monitors

Hi all, I wondered if anyone might be able to advise on a suitable heart monitor? I have a Biotronik Dual Chamber PM fitted and use a Garmin Forerunner 110. However, since having the PM fitted the Garmin heart rate monitor no longer functions properly seemingly the PM interferes with the heart rate monitor. Many thanks Dave

What Should I Do - More

Thank you for your helpful advice and opinions following my question “What should I do”. Just to recap, following my first pacemaker, a Biotronik dual chamber, my usual GP (General Practitioner) the Doctor I usually see at my local Surgery – this is how it works here in the UK; he was opposed to my starting at the Gym again. The two Physiologist at my first PM check after seven weeks had assured me that there was no problem and no restriction on what I could do at the Gym.

Running

I read a few messages from other runners here. I've had my pacemaker for just over a year. I survived a complete heart block on 4/28/2012. This is my first year training again and I'm not running well. I am set at 40 since my at rest is noramlly pretty low like most runners. I am beginning to feel discouraged about getting back to where I was. I was able to run 30 miles per week at peek training season. 18-20 mid season. Seems like I'll never get there. My endurance barely there and my b...

Minute ventilation sensor problem

I have just had my third pacemaker, the second with a minute ventilation (MV) sensor. On several occasions while cycling the pacing rate has suddenly plunged from a rate around 160 bpm to 90 bpm, and has taken a couple of minutes to recover to an appropriate rate. The previous MV PM did not exhibit this. Has anyone experienced similar problems?

Target HR when exercising for weight loss

I have had my pacemaker for several years now but just starting to workout. My max HR is set at 90 so even when I exercise I don't feel like I'm accomplishing anything. I sweat but I don't know if I am actually burning the calories because my HR will only go to 90. I need some help with this. I'm struggling because I am trying to get healthy and lose weight.
