NICE has spoken! See:
NICE technology appraisals [TA324] Published date: November 2014
www.Nice.org.uk
This is a fantastic review of outcomes and cost effectiveness.
I would recommend reading the summary, and if you really want to understand PM medical work, the whole appraisal.
Well done the NHS UK.

Throwing this out there for anyone in the Indianapolis area. Saw a new EP, Dr. John Trey Moore III at St Francis. He is over the top fabulous, zeroed right in on issues needing immediate attention including noncardiac issues, ordered tests and referrals the hospitalists didn't consider. Two and a half hour appointment! That's even longer than I spend with my patients and I am OCD thorough.
His St Jude tech, who happens to be an ultra runner, was not there but he said she had expertise in...

New EP feels I'd do better with a PM/ICD device, rather than the 3-lead Medtronic device I currently own. I understand the ICD would come into play if a dangerous tachycardia set in. How does one define a "dangerous" tachycardia? (In early 2012, prior to my PM implant, the folks at TCAI were not concerned with my NSR pulse of 125 for 2+ months) I just went through a 118 pulse for 15 minutes before resuming my 100% paced 84 pulse. A couple EMS folks in the past have stated my PM will allow a...

Just thought I'd say hi, joined the site tonight after many months of being a visitor! Was surprised by needing a little buddy in my shoulder just over 6 months ago. Went into hospital to have the 'engine' rebuilt & 6 days later had my permanent buddy installed. It was a massive shock as it had never been discussed as a possible complication or outcome! It's has been very daunting to face the fact that I now need my little buddy to exist, but more & more I'm starting to trust my buddy. In the e...

Does anyone know anyone who has received the new leadless pacemaker units by Nanostim.. This is a company that St Jude purchased .. The pacemaker itself is about the size of a coin. At the moment they are not available in the U.S. but are in use in Europe

Couple days ago, my pulmonologist gave me a sample "Ventolin HFA" inhalation Aerosol to help my occasional allergy induced shortness of breath. I have yet to use it ---- due to the side effect warning of "may induce rapid heart rate." Am I being too gun-shy?
EP doc stated, "It is OK to use."

Interesting 1st meeting with my new EP today. This giant clinic was EMPTY! Usually there are dozens upon dozens of patients everywhere on the three floors of services. (They must have stayed home to prepare the turkey) -- In the past, my former EP gave me a cursory 5 min exam, and sent me on my way with the typical "You're fine!" New EP had me grilled and tested for 90 minutes! Included a PM download. He brought up ALL kinds of subjects ----- A-Flutter ----- Placement of the three PM lea...

Recent EKG showed two skipped beats. Have Medtronic dual chamber pacemaker pacing 100 percent for past three years due to bradycardia.. Do not feel palpatations in chest or other symptoms of afib. Thought pacemakekr would control rhythm problem but now fear afib or other rhythm issues can develop. Cardiologist being cautious and will do another EKG in two months since I've never had symptoms of skipped beats before.
It is common to have more than one rhythm disturbance? Getting really s...

Hi there! just a quick question for the pros :) What would the pm's rate response function have to do with on demand pacing if anything? I had a weird almost episode a bit ago~When walking at 3.7 mph on my treadmill (one of the first times since pm 2 weeks ago) I had a pause that lasted a bit longer than I think it should have, kinda knocked me back a bit, rhythm came back SLOW and not steady, then got back on treadmill when the dust cleared, happened again, this time when the beat finally came...

Hi to all,
I have been 100% surgically induced paced since August 1990 and have had 5 pacemakers since with several leads. I mean that I am surely wired for sound. I worry that a wire will come loose and kill me, I have no heart rhythm without my trusty pacemaker! I was born with WPW, has anyone out there had this experience? As far as I know I was one of the only people to have the experimental surgery done who survived. Does anyone have a similar story? Thanks, Kim

Two weeks after my 55th birthday, I decided enough was enough. I had fatigue to the point where I could not walk from my living room to my bedroom in a 1400 square foot home without nearly passing out. My blood pressure monitor said I had a heart rate of 35, so I went online to find out how to re-calibrate what I thought was a faulty reading. Finally went to my doctor. He did an EKG, and next thing I know, I am in an ambulance headed to a heart specialist 45 miles away. He kept me in the hospita...

I've just read this report in the news today :-
A 30-year-old woman has died in her husband's arms after her pacemaker was affected by an airport security scanner.
The tragic incident occurred in the southern Russian town of Ulan-Ude.
Diana Tolstova died in the airport just minutes after passing through the scanner. Her husband Maxim, 33, said the couple had provided the airport with papers detailing the pacemaker.
According to the Daily Telegr...

Well i got a pacemaker for my 51st birthday on Tuesday. Last Thurs early morning i passed out in the bathroom. I had banged my knee the day before and i guess the extreme pain triggered AFib that i did not know i had. I had been having fluttering for years off and on. Energy level has been decreasing. Stress level increasing. Coughing all the time. High blood pressure. Taking care of injured hubby x 5 years, keeping eye on 81 yr old mom after Dad died Aug 2013, put my dog down last week after st...

Hi,
I just received a double lead medtronics pm two days ago at 39... Not quite how I was planning on rolling into my 40's! I had a 15 second pause because of a high Vegal tone. All of the doctors kept saying that going to the dentist is worse than the pm surgery so I feel that admitting that I'm sore is wrong. I'm a high school PE teacher so I know that I'm out of school for a few weeks. How were your recoveries and when does lying flat feel good again? Thank you for taking the time to w...
