I have had my second PM for about 5 years now. It is not as deeply planted as my first one. In fact it is barely under the skin and I can easily feel its surface and the leads coming out of the top. Like many others in here I was having sharp little pains when I moved my upper body and when I rolled onto my left side at night. The sensation would be a feeling of tightness and either prickly or sharp pain. Well the past couple of months I have stuck to a careful exercise routine at the gym at least 3 times a week. In addition to cardio work on the stationary bike and indoor track I am doing sets on the Lat machine and also with dumbbells on a flat bench. On the Lat machine I do 3 sets of 10 each. The first set with 70lbs, then 80, then 90. I do the pull downs slow and smooth and then go for a full stretch on the way back up and hold that stretch for several seconds before the next pull down. I had not done this exercise since getting my first PM in 2002 because of worrying about damaging leads. But I have to say it is amazing how much improvement in motion and reduction in pain in the past few weeks. I no longer feel that tight feeling around the PM area.
The other exercise is with 25 and then 30 lb dumb bells. Lying flat on a bench I start with my elbows bent and the dbs low on the sides of my chest. Then moving slowly and smoothly I press the dbs up until both arms are fully extended and then I touch the dbs together similar to the motion used in butterflies or "flies" as we used to call them. This exercise really works the pectoral muscles . Gone are the chest pains, gone is the puffy swelling under my left arm pit, and rolling onto my left side no longer wakes me up at night.
For those who have access and are physically able, please give it a try. Use very light weights if need be. The weights I use now are much lighter than I used 20 years ago but its not the amount of weight that matters. What does matter is adding strength and range of motion to all the muscles in the arms, chest, shoulders and back. It even has eliminated those pesky shooting pains in my shoulder blade area.
In conclusion, this is obviously not for everybody, but for those of you who can, start light in weight, do as many reps as you can comfortably (8 to 12 for me depending on the weight) and use slow steady smooth technique. It works!!!

I will be 72 but don't feel a day over 80, haha. Actually I feel very blessed. My physiological age seems to be much less than my years. I was very athletic all my life and have maintained the same weight all these years. Got some minor wear and tear issues so I don't run anymore but I can walk at a very brisk pace. I have to give my wife a lot of credit. She is 58 and won't let me eat junk food and nags the hell out of me if do. We have been married 32 years now all of them good. I'm not much for sitting around. Typical type A person. My grown kids tell me I was a real pain back in the day, but I finally mellowed out with age. :)
I know from reading your posts that you went through way more than me. I was only Brady/SSN. Not a big deal compared to so many folks in here. It would please me a lot if my little exercise routine helps anyone else.

Hello All,
Just got a pacemaker and joined not knowing what to expect and wanted to have pacer friends.
There seem to be mixed messages on raising arm above head. My cardiologist says no problem after 1 week and can resume simple exercise? I feel a little fatigue still when walking 1 week after surgery. is this normal??

Great job! Good information as I'm always looking for exercise routines people with PM's can do.
I'm going to show your post to my cardio rehab nurses. Yet another thing people with PM's can do.
Question I have is your age?
Another example of life getting better.
