all done!

I finished the 5K!!!!! My time was a very pokey 41:22 but I met my goals- I wasn't last and I crossed the finish line :)

I was pretty tired by the last stretch, came around the bend and two friends from my gym were there waiting for me and ran the last bit with me. I'm blessed to have so much support.

How long did it take you to train for this?

Congratulations on your achievement. If there is any justice, you were due to be rewarded for all the excellent advice you serve up on this site. Did you run all the way or do some fast-walking? Best, John

I signed up for it a month ago. I didn't do much other than my regular workouts, just extra runs a few times a week. Since my gym had a team entered in the race, they built the training into the workouts (it changes every day) so I would have been training had I entered or not.

John, I walked part!

Sweeet!

How do you feel? Did you have fun? Do you want to run the Disney Wine and Dine half? I'm going to try a do over, staying upright this year:)

Bossy

by Tracey_E - 2014-05-03 08:05:08

When is it? I suspect a half is a bit ambitious but I would have said I'd never do a 5k so I try to never say never. I'm all for the wine and dine part, any time, no training needed :)

I was tired at the end but overall felt really good! My shins are toast now, probably more from the extra running I've been doing than the race itself. My legs aren't the least bit sore so far (knock on wood). This is the first time I did 5k all at once, but I've been doing stuff every day. Ex, one day this week we did 1/2 mile warm up, the workout was alternating 100m sprints with a barbell complex, 16 rounds so one mile total. Another day we were doing 200m runs carrying 30# sandbags alternating with other things. My limitations have always been stamina, not strength. Most of my gym buddies could do a 5k without breaking a sweat!

It is usually Nov 9 or 10. It's a late night run, Epcot is open until 4am after for the runners wine and dine after party. It's 13 miles of Disney fun. Jeff Galloway has a run/walk training plan on the rundisney website, I believe I started at a ratio on 5 seconds running to 90 seconds walking when I first started this 2 years ago. I wasn't paced then, thought the shortness of breath was asthma, old age and too much weight. But I finished it that year, my first ever half. The next day my son kept looking at me with disbelief and saying "you went 13 miles..." Of course he finished way ahead of me but he is young.

You Rock!!

Of course you always have, just added a little extra icing on top. Your our hero of never give up!! Jean

Wow!

by golden_snitch - 2014-05-04 02:05:08

Wow, after just one month?! Kudos to you!

I'll be training much longer, but that's also because of the rate response. And I don't want any atrial arrhythmias acting up, which usually happens when I overdo it, so I'm taking this easy and am taking my time to get to the 5k. At the moment, I'm thinking that doing a 5k in late summer/beginning of fall is realistic for me. We'll see.

Maybe next year you can do Medtronic Global Heroes?

I'm glad you made an appointment in advance to treat yourself to a spa day.

Great News Tracey !!!!!

by Tattoo Man - 2014-05-04 08:05:18

I just knew that you could do it.

The next challenge could be a flat 10k using a run/walk regime...you could do a Run 1k/walk4 minutes..using this regime you are virtually garuanteed not to get injured, get stitches or get over tired early on.

Perhaps the important thing is to keep on running even if you do not have a goal race to work towards.

Once again, Congratulations !

Bossy is absolutely right to recommend Jeff Galloways training plan. It is a proven method right up to Marathon distance. He has written really useful stuff for runners at every level.

Best wishes

more training

by Tracey_E - 2014-05-04 09:05:22

Inga, I've been running at least a small distance every day as part of my boot camp workouts for 3 years now. When I started, I walked some days, used the rower the others. It took me a good year to be able to consistently run even 1/4 mile. So yes I only "trained" for a month, but before that was several years of working hard to get to the point I could.

I want to do Global Heroes!!!!!! Maybe not the marathon, but a year would be enough time to be able to do a 10k. Thanks for sharing that, I never heard of it. Inga, maybe you'll be ready by next year too and we could both apply? How fun would it be to have more than one member from here meet up there!

Tat, thanks so much for the encouragement! I could walk a marathon today, running is what kills me. I've tried the couch to 5k training plans. My problem is I hit a wall at about 3 min of running so I walk a bit, then run again. I've been running at least a short distance 5 times a week for several years now. I reached a point where I stopped improving how far I could go after the first year. I suspect it's the beta blockers but who knows. I'm just happy to be able to do as much as I can.

welk done

by wjs1954 - 2014-05-04 09:05:29

Setting a goal is the start,

Something any of us can do.

Putting our toe to the start line sometimes hard to do.

Getting out and finishing, that is what it is all about!!

Great job, well done you should be proud. We are!!!

Good idea!

by golden_snitch - 2014-05-04 10:05:55

Tracey,

I was thinking about applying, too. Originally, I had hoped to be able to do so this year, but now I need to start a bit from the scratch again. But in a year I should definitely be able to do the 10k. When I started running back in 2012, after the AV-node ablation, it took me three months to run consistently for 30 minutes, and the distance was close to 5k. So, I'm optimistic that once the CLS sensor and I get along well, I'll make progress quickly.

Let's keep Medtronic Global Heroes in mind, I'd love to do it with you!

Inga

Whoo Hoo!!!

by valley01 - 2014-05-05 02:05:13

Way to go!!! I hate the actual running part but I love the atmosphere of the races and the benefits of running. I was talked into my first 10k this coming Saturday - I've only run a handful of times since my adrenal surgery in March and adjustments to my PM settings (I have done other cardio classes and workouts so not totally unprepared). I'm not sure how I'll do but I know I'll finish and that's what counts! You have a Personal Best now :)

Way to go
