Extraction

I am having a tooth extracted July 3. Anything special I need to say or do before hand? The whole ICD thing is new to me and I've learned so much form this site I never heard from my cardiologist.

Pre-med

Sort'a what I figured. Tooth is abscessed. Cracked in half to the root. Dentist didn't give me anything either for the infection or for pre-op. Kind of short notice here. Will 3 days of antibiotics be enough?

Didn't figure I'd have to ASK for pain meds after the extraction. Just a bit concerned that one dentist said he'd numb the tooth and remove a cap, then over an hour drive to surgeon for removal. Ouch?

Depends

I actually work at a dental office. U need to check with both docs. The dentist and the carido. The dentist should have your health history so he should have told ya anything you need to know but just make sure your heart doc is informed!! Just eat b4 you go and relax! The dentist is there to help you!

I was having terrible pain with an abscessed tooth. I spoke with my PC and she spoke with my cardio. They said I could take a percocet and 600 mg of Ibprophen and not to take my daily asprin while doing this. It takes away all the tooth ache pain. I have never had meds which could do that and there is nothing more painful than a toothache.

I was also told that pre-antibiotic treatment is not necessary anymore, only if there is actually infection present. I was told that studies indicate it makes no difference and actually adds to potential of creating resistant bugs. I get my teeth work done at the dentistry college of the university where my cardio team are located.

That's my 2 cents.

Tooth extraction

Redd~

You only need pre-med w/antibiotics IF your EF is low or you have problems with any heart valves. IF none of that applies... then only suggestion is to ask for pain meds prior to extraction of that tooth!!! :O) Could not resist that.

Wishing you a speedy recovery,

be aware of shots

If you have ICD because of rythum problem, you should not have any tooth deadening shots that are "cains" such as lidocain. I hade a root canal done on jaw tooth last Tuesday and I had to get many shots (only the first one hurts) as the other stuff they have to use are short acting. Also make sure they do not use ( I don't know how to spell this word) cauthering tools to stop the bleeding. I always harass them about each step to make sure they are careful. I also have to drive 150 miles away to find anyone to work on me as I guess they are scared to stick metal tools in my mouth!
Follow all the rules like a good little patient to avoid a DRY SOCKET-a special kind of misery.
Good Luck.....and farewell to the problem tooth.

The anathesias

Defiantly share your condition with your dentist ! Carbonyl is the one that does not have epinephrine in it which is why it doesn't last as long. I have had upwards of 18 shots working on one tooth. But the rush from the epinephrine is scary. Since having my ICD turned off, I have had lidocaine shots but I also take anti anxiety meds before going in for it.

Check with your doctor first and make sure to give your dentist the info. Be safe.... and make those keys pearly white ; )

Moved up

by Smart Redd - 2008-06-30 06:06:22

Because of the pain and swelling, my extraction has been moved up from Thursday to Tuesday morning. Either my doctor really doesn't like me or ya'll are wrong about meds.

I do have low EF (24?), faulty valve, and - since my jaw is twice its normal size - plenty of infection. I called DR at 8:00 this morning and am still awaiting call back.

According to the dentist's office, the doctor said nothing special need be done before the extraction. . . and evidently no pain meds are needed either.

If'en ya ever had a tooth ache, ya know I'm about ready to take a shotgun to that side of my jaw. So far, no combination of aspirin, Tylenol, and Aleve just don't make it. ow!

I have had my pacer since 2005. At first it ruled my life. It took some time to calm down and make the mental adjustment. I had trouble sleeping and I worried a lot about pulling wires. Now I just live my life as I wish.
