Firefighter fights back, With the help of brother firefighter.

I thought I was invincible, but 4 weeks ago the Department Doctor took me off the engine because I was missing a heart beat, Slow heart rate below 30 BPM, and then it would race to 144 BPM. On a Friday night I got a call, (Friday afternoon 4:30 PM) from my new doctor who said I needed a pacemaker and he would be doing it next Monday. To say the least I had a lot of questions and did not have time to get them answered ,the most important ones would I ever ride an engine again (32 Years on the job and still love it), who was going to pay for it, would I be able to do all the things I was doing before I knew about my condition a on, backpack Be on ski patrol, sail, camp??? Well I asked a one of the guys at work with one and found that he had one but did not have all the same symptoms as I. But he did say it was not a big deal, and that he had the same anxieties as I. The buddy at work told me about the PC Club so I tried it. I listed my questions and had 6 or seven replies ( Thank You, Thank You) all very supportive but not sure about returning to the job. But as it were A fellow Firefighter from Texas with one and some of the same problems as I. He was kind enough to call me and talk for quite a long time and help answer my questions and reassure me. A few days later I was able to talk with the doctor and I asked him if I would be able to work on a engine again. His Answer was "Do you want to"?. I said "of course." He said "do you think you can still do it ?" I said "I was doing it before I knew a little winded and Tired but stile working a busy station with a lot of fire activity." He said "he would let me go back in time". Mean while the workers comp. Doctor said that she did not see any reason why I would not be able to go back to full duty. She put my worker comp claim in, mean while my insurance gave the OK to have the procedure done. After the sugary I got a letter that workers comp. took the case and now it is being worked out through the Insurance companies.
I went in to surgery Monday March24 and got WALKED out of the hospital on Tuesday. Wednesday I went for a 3 to 4 mile walk and have been doing almost every day sense. I am not winded, I thought the reason I was winded was I needed more time on the tread mill. But all i needed was a Pace maker. Now I have tried to pin this missing heart beat on my wife Because she makes my heart skip a beat, ( she does)but the doctor said that is not the case.
Well it is about 2 weeks now and I FEEL Great, on my walks I want to run because the walks don't make me winded but I will ask the doctor on Monday what kind of work out he will let me do. I also lost weight with out much work.
I will check back in later.
Thanks To all of you and I wish you well and thank you again.

It is so nice to hear stories like yours. i am so glad that the PM is helping you so much.
Before getting started in any real physical activity I would check with your Dr. I hope you are able to get back to work...it sounds like you really love your job.
Good luck with everything...and please keep us updated!

Welcome

Hi, Just wanted to welcome you as I didn't get to respond the first time you posted.

I think you can live as full a life as your body will permit. One word of caution, be sure and check with the Dr. before adding a new activity or adding anything back. Like the running. It is always a good idea to ask and then do.

Take care and keep in touch with us here. We want to know how you are doing. This club is such a support and you will come to rely on coming here each day at least to check on posts and such.

Take care,
NH

Congrats!

Wow! What a great story, and very inspiring!! Welcome to the club!! I've just been a member for a couple of weeks, but, have really enjoyed getting to read everyone's stories. I personally don't have a pacemaker, but my 15 yr. old daughter does.

Wishing you continued improvement in your health with the new pacemaker. Sounds like you're doing great!
My daughter's Dr. has been pretty liberal about letting her participate in her favorite sports, within reason, but I always check in with him first.

Take care & God Bless,
Linda

Mtorch
I wish you well.
Just like linda, I don't have a pacemaker but my son Scott had one fitted last year at 17yrs. He is now 18yrs and doing well. It has been hard to tie him down. Since then he has been in a band, Now at university studying bio-medical sciences, He has achieved his black belt in Aikido ( his hero is steven segal ), He is sitting his driving test next month and holds down a job too. I am so proud of him as he has never let it get him down. So far he has only had one or two problems still with dizzy turns. He has been told all the symptoms may not disappear but he won't pass out like he used to. He feels it kick in and copes fine with this. His disabled father and I cannot put all our faith in the pacemaker right now, but that will come in time. Right now, we take each day as it comes.
That's all anyone can do.
Take care

I'm so thrilled for you!

It's so great that everything is working out for you! There is nothing better than getting back to what you love to do, so I hope you can get back on the job sooner rather than later!

Your positive attitude will carry you far, just be careful that you don't overestimate what you can do at first. I had my PM implanted in early February and thought I could just zip back into things, but I still get tired at times (totally against my will!) The key is to respect the heroic effort your body put forth to keep things together prior to your PM- that deserves a little R & R as a reward! I'm planning on having a fairly limit free life (okay, maybe I need to win the lottery to go that far!)

Good luck!
Darlene

back to full duty yet?

by awawrzynski - 2008-10-13 02:10:26

Hi Mtorch! I read your posting. I am a firefighter who got a pacemaker in August and am looking forward to going back to work. I was wondering if I could talk to you about your pacemaker and if you are back to full duty and if you have had any problems. Please email or call me back. Thank you!

You know you're wired when...

Your pacemaker receives radio frequencies.
