Wondering...

I was just wondering if I could pursue a job as a pediatric cardiologist because I know for a fact that I would have to handle magnets. This is the only job I really want and can not think of anything else so if I could get that clarified I would be so grateful. Thanks!!!!

Ask your doc sometime

Perhaps when you go in to see your cardiologist for a pacer check you could ask your doctor about this. I would think that your doctor would be a wealth of information (for obvious reasons) and would like to share with you. I know that my EP is great and he's a talker. He hates rushing patients through and would answer ANY of my questions--even if they are about going into cardiology!

I like your ambition, uva!

Medical School?

Are you in medical school now? How long have you had a cardiac device? If necessary could you change specialties? Ela-girl is right: talk to your EP or cardiologist. Good luck.

Wondering

I think you said you were 13 now, so that means you have a long time to go before you have concern about magnets and your pacemaker. Shoot, who knows by then they may have improved pacemakers to the point that magnets or any other electromagnet fileld producers are no longer a concern.

But, if you were that P. C. today, I would say about all you would have to be concerned about is getting too close to a patient while they are having a MRI. As for the magnet, just keep it at arms length from your PM and it should cause no problems. If you do get too close the magnet will not stop your PM, it will just change your heart beat pattern and you may get light headed. Get away from the magnet and things should return to normal in a few minutes.

So I say get on with your plans. Some of my great, great grand kids may need a good P.C. about the time you start your practice.

Good luck,

Pockets

I've already told my doctors that i am going to be a cardiologist and they said it should be no problem. Future cardiologists unite! But its gonna take 4ever, because u first (i've been doing research for about a year now) have to get a bachelors degree.
You can either go all year and get in 3 or regular in 4. (3 is excelled)
Then you have to become a doc 6-8 years of medical school. (6 at minimum if you excel like i plan)
Then u have to do specialized training for like 8 more years.
Some colleges that offer cardiology as a corse (like study if the heart) are Talhasse. I hope to go there. So good luck. Apparently, we have a long ways to go. Good luck!
