Colonoscopy

I'm scheduled for my first colonoscopy next week. I was awake for my pacemaker surgery with no problems. For the colonoscopy I also don't want to be given any drugs which put me "out" or be told that I wasn't "out" yet can't remember what happened. Can anybody share experiences, advice, or suggestions?

Why be awake?

Hi Vonnie,

Had colonoscopy last July. I had no desire to be aware of what was happening! Versed is the drug used and it was quite wonderful. Colonoscopy can be very uncomfortable especially if any polyps need to be biopsied or removed. You might want to reconsider and talk to the GI who will do the procedure. Good luck and I pray you have a good outcome!

I had my colonoscopy on September 25 and I was sedated...not fully as they need you to turn your body once in awhile...anyways...they hit the section that was inflammed (since then I've been diagnosed with colitis)and I supposedly yelled for them to stop, which they did. What I am saying is: you need the drugs!!! You will not be put out totally. I can NOT imagine going thru this without. I've had every test known for gastro and believe me....please rethink this. In the end it is totally up to you, but you know that I would not steer you wrong.

Don't have a colonoscopy without drugs. Trust me on this. I know people who have tried.
If they need to take out a polyp and you aren't sedated, you,ll have to go back for another proceedure anyway. If you "under" during the colonoscopy they can remove it right there and then.

Best of luck,

All the comments are right on the button. You will get versed, which is the CRS (cant remember s----) drug,, it is also used for TEE's,,if they need to remove anything they will have other drugs on hand to put you out,if you want.
Its no biggie,,,honestly.

good luck

I made some comments to an earlier post so won't repeat it again. I just ran across the following site that you might be interested in.

As a biomedical engineer with experience with biofeedback and monitoring I can say with confidence that what happens under these drugs is not gone. It is a ticking time bomb. A lot depends on what actually happens while under the drug.

There has been a trend to using propofol (IV) for sedation typically given by a CRNA.Propofol is gaining popularity in part because there is less amnesia and a more rapid recovery time (usually a few minutes) .The procedure centers can have a quicker turn over time, more patients per unit time and time is money. I had it once and have had versed plus demerol twice-they both work fine. The total cost is higher as there is an fee for the CRNA (or anesthesiologist if one is use).Colonosscopy without anesthesia is something few people would do a second time.
