BATTERY LOW

My biventricular cardiac resynchronisation pacemaker will shortly reach elective replacement mode. Is it OK for the hospital not to replace the pacemaker at this point and to leave me heading rapidly towards end of life mode. I have had it for 7 1/2 years. I also have an AV node ablation and have no rescue rhythym or residual pacing. Any replies gratefully recieved. A bit worried Peter.

ERI and EOL

Hi Peter,
Hospitals work differently on when they elect to change pacemakers that are running out of juice. If you are concerned I would contact your centre to double check. Its not an inconvenience for them to take a phone call to put your mind at rest. Also make sure they know you are without an escape rhythm. When a pacemaker eventually reacher ERI it then has a range from weeks to months left of battery depending on usage before it reaches EOL. EOL devices should be changed pronto. I just thought you may be pleased to know that when the device reaches ERI it still has a little left in the battery.
My advice is to call your centre and ask them this question as they have your file and data to hand. If you are unsure you should always pick up the phone.
If they know you are concerned they may well bring the box change forward to alleviate this anxiety.
Regards
Carl
