Fluid retention

Annette,

Sotalol is a medication that has both beta blocker and anti arrhythmic properties.  I am taking a beta blocker (Bisoprolol) and I find that it seems to affect my metabolism, slowing everything down, so I have started putting on weight too.  It does feel like fluid retention in the abdomen which can be uncomfortable.

All we can do is to ask to try another medication if we feel that the med we are on might be causing the problem.  We should also get checked to rule out any significant causes for weight gain, like for example heart failure.

As Gemita says, any unexplained weight change should be reported to your doctors (not just cardiologist). According to drugs.com, fluid retention or rapid weight gain are side-effects that should be reported to your doctor immediately

One indication is puffiness of your feet or ankles. Press your thumb into the skin just above your ankle for ten seconds or so and see how long it takes for the imprint to dissappear. It should bounce back very quickly.

Yes it can, and sometimes may need to be offset with a diuretic (waterpill). Definitely go in to see your Physician. You may need an echo to check your heart function if it hasn't been done in a while, abundance of caution.
