About 20% of the people in the United States are walking around with some form of heart valve regurgitation and don't know it.
I have it too. While it isn't the best thing to have, it is treatable. There are several things that can be done now when you get to the point where you need physical treatment.
I volunteered at a 1300 bed hospital on the heart floor where I received my pacemaker. I took people out after they had outpatient surgery. Also got to talk with various vendors for different heart medical procedures. There were several mitral valve treatments that were in the final stages of testing. You'd see people come in at 7:30 AM, get their heart valve worked on and go home by 2:30 in the afternoon.
So while it is serious, there is a lot of positive medical treatment that is out there now and more to come in the future.
Hope everything else is going well for you.

I'm 43 and have had my pacemaker four weeks today. I'm looking forward to living another 50 years and this marvelous device inside me will help me do that.
Yes, me too. Quite a common finding on echocardiogram

Hello JimmyandJeremy,
I have several leaky valves, including mitral valve and my cardiologist/EP is not in the least concerned and said it was very common and probably normal for me!! Not sure that I would agree, but there you are. The only thing we can do is to make sure that it doesn't progress and start causing symptoms. They are keeping a close eye on mine and doing an echocardiogram from time to time to assess the degree of any progression. But I would imagine that we would start to have real symptoms if our leakages got worse. I was told in patients with good heart function, mild to moderate disease is usually not considered serious or require any treatment
