Flutters after Pacemaker placement

Hi there

I had a biotronik PM placed 2 days ago after fainting at work.

Since that time I have been experiencing quite frequent flutters in my throat and stomach (and associated slight dizziness) mainly at rest that often make me cough.

I think I have read here that you can go back to your PM tech and they can possibly adjust the settings to try and eliminate it?

Is it something due to the voltage settings for the ventricle lead?

I also feel quite tired from just very light walking but I am assuming this might pass?

I would be very appreciative of any advice as I’m finding it all very stressful!

Thanks for your help.

Cheers

Scott

They often start with the voltage turned up high until the heart has a chance to get used to being paced and the leads grow into place, then they turn it down. Even with that, you shouldn't be feeling it. It's common to just be more aware of the heart when we are newly paced but that would only explain the flutters, not the cough or feelings in the throat. I would give them a call, make sure everything is where it's supposed to be.

You just had surgery two days ago. It's minor surgery, but it's still hard on the body and will take some time to get your energy back.

Hiccups

Hey Scott,

I think that it is perfectly normal what you are experiencing, not everyone has it but some people notice the pacing in the beginning. In my first 6 months of having a pm I constantly had the hiccups, several times a day.

I think your tiredness is explainable because your heart is simply contracting more times a day, at least, that was the case with me. The doctor simply lowered my bpm during the daytime after a couple months.

I hope this helps,
