Early pacemaker replacement

My EP has suggested I have an early replacement of my pm.  I have about a year of battery life left in my pm.   I am on blood thinners because of one episode of afib and he says that the newer pm has a chip that they can check the pm daily and if you have an afib episode you can start on blood thinners immediately otherwise you don’t have to take any.   I’m really torn about this.   I really need input.

Running away from this EP is NOT fast enough!!!

Now, ASSUMING everything you told us is true, I'm NOT sure what rock he/she lives under on the planet Pluto, but ANY PM can be checked daily to see if you have ANY arrhythmia.

AS to going on anticoagulants for A-Fib, unless he knows something I don't, they do not taqke effect immediately.   Not even the new ones that are supposedly better than Warfarin.,  If you DO have A-Fib now,  going off the warfarin (or whtever) now & depending on even a daily check for A-Fib could be too late.  A clot formed by it can get to the brain w/i seconds of being formed & you would be dead before your PM could be checked.

Something is really wrong here.

What your EP suggests doesn't make sense to me unless you have had the one-and-only afib attack in your life.... (  and anything is possible ! )

Everything I've read suggests that  while a blood clot can form within 24 hrs during a prolonged attack of afib, all of the blood thinners take at least 2 weeks to work effectively.

So a stop / start blood thinner regime is not wise if you want a MAXIMUM level of safety .   It depends on how much you hate being on blood-thinners I guess.     I suggest that you  ask your EP :-

- how likely is it that you will have another afib attack in his opinion

- what he considers the blood-clot risk to be after a short bout of afib AND

- ask him how long he thinks it takes before a blood-thinner  gives stroke- protection.

Best of luck

Ian

Thank you both!!

Thank you both in yr input.

How fast is a clot formed?

I asked Dr. Google the following quewstion:  How Much Atrial Fibrillation Does It Take to Cause Stroke?

Find the answer at:

https://www.everydayhealth.com/columns/jared-bunch-rhythm-of-life/how-much-atrial-fibrillation-has-to-occur-to-have-a-stroke/

This is a "How long is a piece of string?" question.

It's too long to reprint. The author's monograph supports my contention that trying to wait, or as Ian says, "Stop & go" anti-coagulent therapy is a fools errand.  .

The pacer systems are really very reliable. The main problem is the incompetent programming of them. If yours is working well for you, get on with life and enjoy it. You probably are more at risk of problems with a valve job than the pacer.
