Pacemaker

Hi.  I have been told I have a double heart block and although I do not get dizzy my heart rate drops to 40bpm at times. The Dr says I need a pacemaker. As I have no symptoms I wonder why?

Hey Phil,

I'm really no expert,  but unless your a top athlete your heart rate shouldn't be below 65bpm. So probably best to get a pm so your heart rate is running fine.

They are a bit uncomfortable to begin with but you soon get used to it and the operation is a breeze.

This forum is great and you'll get loads of support.

Best of luck

Similar situation

Hi

I had a similar situation! I was always of the opinion i was ok as I did not have any symptoms. However, after being told I needed a pacemaker, I rapidly deteriorated over 6 months. I became slower at walking, I could not remember things, I was exhausted, I struggled to concentrate and then I started to feel dizzy. Only then did I start to think, ok maybe there is something not quite right. After having the pacemaker, I now feel so much better. Lookjng back, I see now that in fact I was not 100% for a long time but I had never attributed it to my heart as previously I had AF so very different symptoms.

I feel great when I wake up, lots more energy, awareness has improvef and even my skin, nails and hair are better now as my body is now running with the right oxygen levels in my blood.

Listen to your doctor and best of luck.

Denial?

I too had a hard time beliving I needed a pacemaker. Sure I felt rotten sometimes, but doesn't everyone? I was the queen of denial.

Let me tell you, after I got the pacemaker, what it felt like to have a regular heartbeat was a revelation! I could think so much clearer. Everything was lighter and clearer. Funny things were funnier. My irrational "anxiety" disappeared. I put anxiety in quotes, because I know now that what I and others called anxiety when my heart would suddently go to thudding for no reason was in fact a heart that was beating all out of rhythm.

With hindsight, I can see that I could have benefitted from a pacemaker years before I got one.

A heart rate of 40, unless you are an athlete in top condition, isn't enough to keep all your organs well supplied with oxygen.

I've seen many posts about people being concerned about exercise after having a device so thought I would let you know that yesterday I raced my first marathon since having my pacemaker fitted in fall 2004.
