Pro BNP

I noticed nowhere on this site is there a discussion about Pro BNP NT (Probrain Natriuretic Peptide NT). It's generally related to heart failure. Normal # is 0-124 pg/mL.  Last July, my Mayo Clinic blood draw showed my Pro BNP NT number to be around 3,700 and a more recent blood draw showed it has risen to 4,659 - way high.  Altho the test Mayo performed had this footnote: diagnostic NT-proBNP cutoff of 900 pg/mL has been suggested in adults 50-75 years of
age in the absence of renal failure.

Anyone here able to expound on this issue?

Hi Leila.............My situation is somewhat similair to your mom's.  -  I have a cardiomyopathy, LVEF is at 22%.  Over the past 3 years, my gfr has stayed right at 60.  BNP has risen and fallen and risen and fallen again between the 250 - 300.  NT-Pro BNP has risen from 3,000+ to 4,000+ .............I'm trying to get my mind wrapped around which is the more important number.

Generally, I'm feeling and doing pretty OK. Up until 5 months ago, I was able to treadmill 3 mi per day/walk 2 miles at an indoor walking track and cycle 4 miles on a recumbent bike AND THEN my right knee started barking.  I could barely walk. 1st Doc "guessed" at where to inject cortisone. His treatment had no positive effect. I finally contacted a different ortho Doc who diagnosed me Iliotibial Band Tendonitis. He referred me to a Sports Medicine Doc who knew her stuff!!  When at her office, she pulled out an echo device and began scanning my right leg - thigh to ankle.  After a few minutes she proclaimed, "I see it!!  Want me to fix it?"  YES, I shrieked!  She said it was an area they don't normally have to treat. She pulled out her other equipment and guided the needle with the echo to where she wanted to inject the cortisone.  Three days later, I could bent my knee and walk normally! Been doing P.T. along with stretches and walking 2 - 4 miles every day!!!

I had a pacemaker when I was 11. I never once thought I wasn't a 'normal kid' nor was I ever treated differently because of it. I could do everything all my friends were doing; I just happened to have a battery attached to my heart to help it work.
