scanner in security at airport

Hey yall!  My PM is 6 years old and all is well.  I haven't flown in a while and can't remember if I should avoid the scanner in security.  What do you do?

You can go through both the 3d scanner and the regular metal detector.

Also, I tell them first and show them my medical card, from the manufacturer, that documents the type of device implanted.  If they use a wand, I ask them not to pause it over my ICD.  Look at the manual that came with your device or check your manufacturer's website.

Q:  Can I go through security systems such as those found in airports and courthouses?
A: Given the short duration of security screening, it is unlikely that your Medtronic heart device will be affected by metal detectors (walk-through archways and hand-held wan\ds) or full-body imaging scanners (also called millimeter wave scanners and 3D imaging scanners) such as those found in airports, courthouses, and jails. The metal case of your heart device could set off a metal detector. To minimize the risk of temporary interference with your heart device while going through the security screening process, avoid touching metal surfaces around any screening equipment. Do not stop or linger in a walk-through archway; simply walk through the archway at a normal pace. If a hand-held wand is used, ask the security operator not to hold it over your heart device and not to wave it back and forth over your heart device. You may also request a hand search as an alternative. If you have concerns about these security screening methods, show your device ID card, request alternative screening, and then follow the instructions of the security personnel.

I am a frequent flyer and have not had problems although I go for the 3D scanner or pat down if that’s not available.  I only do that because I once went through the walk through scanner and felt woozy but only for 3 seconds! (Does that even count???)

Also, be aware that you might notice a lot of “activity” in your heart during taxi and takeoff.  I finally decided that this is from all the bumping around during those periods.  My rate response mistakenly thinks I’m up running around!

Have fun flying!

Airport Security

The PM tech who went through all the Dos and Don'ts with me after getting my implant told me to make sure I showed my PM card to security BEFORE getting screened and not to go through the metal detector but request a manual screen.  He said that the metal detector probably wouldn't hurt me but the big dude tackeling me might.  He said "I had enugh titanium in my shoulder to look like a big gun in a holster" and security wouldn't be amused (are they allowed to have a sense of humor?).

My EP also banned me from mowing my lawn.  Since I would be sitting on it for a couple of hours at a time and I'm PM dependent, the magnetic field from the alternator could cause a problem (so it'll cost me $500/mo to have my lawn mowed).

You know you're wired when...

You fondly named your implanted buddy.
