Tiredness after pacemaker implant

My mom had a Medtronic pacemaker put in in June 2017.    She'd been working with a cardiologist who had said she was going to need one at some point. (She's 75) the reason for that discussion was her low heart rate.   She stayed in the low 40's.  She then had a bout of afib (it's terrifying to watch your mom cardiovert in front of you!!!!)and they needed to put her in solderol for the afib, and obviously her heart rate was much too low for the medicine.   When the doc came to talk to her right before they brought her back for the surgery,, her heart rate was 36, his eyes 👀 went like that!   And said, let's get this done now.   We were really hoping with the pacemaker, her energy would be improved with her heart rate at a better level.   She's been really struggling with zero energy.  She's worn the device  for 24 hours that checks that everything is working correctly.  She's had bloodwork (including thyroid testing) and an ultrasound of her heart.   Is anyone else going through this- and if so, have you found anything that has helped?   Thank you in advance!  My mom has always been active & we ride horses together & love long walks with our jack Russell terriers.  It's very hard to watch her struggling!   God bless!!!

Pacemaker settings?

by Gotrhythm - 2018-02-01 16:38:35

There are several pacemaker settings that could affect whether a person feels "tired."

I always think pacemaker settings need to be looked into first, not because it's neccessarily the most common problem, but because it's the easiest and cheapest to test for and fix.

Do not accept, "Her pacemaker is working fine." That only means it's working the way it's settings are programmed to. It's not about the settings being right or wrong. It's about them being ideal for the patient.

Tiny changes can make a big difference. I was like a new person when they changed my base heartrate from 65 to 70.

Robin is right too. Cardiac rehab can help a lot.
