I have had a battery since 1975 and am on number 14 or 15 with terminal illness at hand I wanted to know the longest anyone was dependent as I have had 43 years end my first surgery in 67 at Penn State at the age of 3 I was put on the Penn State heart pump for 14 hours and 10 years old when I received my first battery 43 years ago so if anyone knows the longest Survivor I would like to know also how far I made it chasing a pink bunny beating a drum

This gives me hope for a long life! I'm 31yo going on 10 years paced. Does anyone know the prognosis of someone depenedent on a pacemaker? I suppose it depends on the disease, but anyone know any research?
Congrats on all the years. Sorry to hear you are terminal.. but we ultimately all are as humans, well cyborgs. ;)

According to something I read several years ago when I typed "life expectancy with a pacemaker" into my browser, the life expectancy of someone with a pacemaker is about the same as someone who doesn't need one.
Wish I could cite the precise article.
A nomination

I would put Tracey in the hall of fame . She always talks sense and often has a go at answering the tricky posts. ( I do worry though about her obsession of keeping up with her daughters in life's athletic challenges ! )

Every cardiologist I've had has told me that this will not affect my life expectancy. After my annual check last year my ep said he predicts my joints will give out before my heart. Or, as Ian so astutely points out, more likely keeping up with one of my children will be what does me in. As long as I can, I will, but jeez, they both seem to get a little crazier every year. I have no idea where they got that from. Weird.
TatMan, that's quite the A-list there. We should have a party.

I'm 44, active and have had my device for two years. I love it as I can run again and enjoy working out without feeling like I'm an old man.
might be you!

If you do a search for our member Gellia, she's the member here I think has been paced the longest but if I remember correctly she got her first one in the early 70's. She had one of the first dual lead devices. I'm sorry to hear you have a terminal illness. Stay strong, you're obviously a fighter.
