Fasting and medications and CABG and PM

CABG - 2009 / St. Jude PM - 2011.

was planning on doing a 10day "fast" starting today.  was wondering if fasting would interfere with the metropolol (50mg)? I plan to do only 10 days, with daily walking and yardwork.  Any ideas would help.

talk to your doctor

Call your doctor about the meds but I'm going to guess that it's a bad idea. Many fasts are not safe for anyone much less heart patients. What's your purpose in doing the fast?

Fasting will make your body go into conservation mode so after it will slow your metabolism and you'll burn fewer calories than now. As a heart patient, I'm wary of anything that puts us into ketosis (when you get so few carbs that the body is burning fat instead of glucose) so that's another reason to check with your doctor before trying it.

The best thing to do is eat better and less, move more. Long term liveable changes are better than something drastic that you can't sustain. Check out Whole Life Challenge. I've done it before and am doing it again with a group of buddies from my gym starting in a few weeks. Join Weight Watchers if you think meetings would be helpful. I did that for about a year, learned some great techniques for monitoring portions and changing my attitude about food. MyFitnessPal.com is a free tracker with a lot of good advice and support also, really nice mobile app and tracks  nutrition and activity as well as calories. Those are just the 3 I've done and liked perrsonally,, there are a lot of other good options out there that are healthier and easier to maintain than a fast.

Fasting for prolonged periods

This is a bad thing. Your body will use stored fat and that can lead to ketosis.  This by itself is associated with cardiac arrhythmias, perhaps due to the increase in stress hormones such at adrenalin and cortisol, and a change in the acidity levels of your body.  Metoprolol will be the least of your problems with a 10 day fast!

Far better to loose weight slowly with a restriction of calories whilst maintaining vitamins and proteins.

I am just now 40 but have had these blackouts all my life. I am thrilled with the pacer and would do it all over again.
