MY PACEMAKER WAS SET AT 60 FOR MORE THAN T 4 MONTHS, MAYBE SEVERAL YEARS. WITHOUT THE ABILITY TO INCREASE WHEN ACTIVITY INCREASED. TOLD NEW SURGEN WHO WAS TO CHANGE OUT MEDTRONIC PACEMAKER TO NEW ONE WITH A DEFIBULATER ABOUT THAT ISSUE. HE LOOKED SHOCKED. HE TOLD THE NURSE THAT IT SHOULD BE TURNED ON. THAT WAS NOV 7TH AND I HAD THE NEW IMPLANT DONE ON THE FIRST OF DEC. ANYONE KNOW IF THIS WOULD BE A PROBLEM AND MIGHT HAVE CAUSE ME PERMENT DAMAGE. MY HEART GOT WORSE THE LAST 6 MONTHS.

I am 100% pacemaker dependant and have been all my life. I try not to think about how a little metal box keeps me alive - it would drive me crazy. So I lead a very active life.
pacing

Why did you get it in the first place? Many of us don't need the pacer to get our rate up for us. Most doctors don't turn it on unloess we need it because it saves battery. No it would not have caused damage having rate response turned off, you just would have been extra tired on exertion. Had it been bad enough to notice and you told them, they could have easily turned it on.
Sometimes pacing in general causes the heart to deteriorate over the years, but more often it would have happened regardless of pacing. The heart had problems to begin with, that's how we ended up with the devices in the first place.
