I've had my pacemaker for two years and have had terrible acid reflux ever since. I have had a gastroscope and all is clear. I have beén on Nexium for a year and a half and would like to get off of it. My doctors keep saying the two aren't linked but I think it is more than a coincidence. Has anyone else had this problem and have the doctors found an answer other than medication and diet?

Finding the cause

I had reflux for a couple of years before I got a pacemaker. Should I worry that they are linked and the reflux caused me to need a pacemaker?
Here's the real connection, I think. In general, older people are more likely than younger people to have acid reflux. And older people are more likely to require pacemakers than younger people.
I notice that you fhaven't filled out your bio. Still, I suspect that for both of us, the root cause of needing a pacemaker and having reflux is advancing age.
Just because two things occur together, does not mean one caused the other.
Did you know that over 90% of people in prison for murder ate some form of potatoes within 24 hours of committing their crime?

Got Rhythm is HILARIOUS! I think we should go eat some potatoes and hunt him down!

Zantac

I, too, have GERD. I had it before I got my PM; however, after I got my PM, I began to hack up a tiny bit of blood almost every morning. This raised a lot of alarms. After checkups, tests, chest x-rays, it was determined that it was all from reflux and I was prescribed Zantac. I haven't had any bloody sputum since then. (For the record, I'm not a smoker or drinker.)
I had taken Rx Prilosec for a year prior to my PM. Apparently, PPIs do stop working after about 12 months so it is smart to just get off. Zantac is an H2 Antagonist. I have no idea what that is but I know it's not a PPI!
Good luck with figuring it out.
