Pacemakers

I am scheduled for a pacemaker next week. Pulse in the low 50's and lightheadedness, plus a fainting episode which got me a ride to ER in an ambulance. Hoping to eliminate these troubling symptoms and have more energy. I am 71 and like walking, working out and gardening.

Does it affect swiming or being in a hot tub?

Swimming

Initially you will not be able to swim or play golf until cleared by your doctor. The movement of your arms overhead and twisting is the concern. After 6 weeks I was cleared for all normal exercise including swimming, golf, tennis and weight training again.

That said, work back into your normal activities slowly. It takes awhile to get back to the level of activity that you are used to

No swimming, hot tub or bath, just showers for about 4 weeks

There are two answers to your questions

1. no swimming or hot tubs until you have been cleared by your doctor, post implant.

2. Once you are cleared there are practicallly no limits on activities you can do. We have members who participate in any sport you can think of.

Do make sure you doctor knows you are a swimmer. It can make a difference when it's time to make adjustments on the pacemaker.

About hot tubs. The hot tub will not hurt your pacemaker.  But some people with heart issues find exposure to sustained heat saps their energy and hot tubs and saunas are not a good idea. If they are hot enough for long enough, they can pass out. On the other hand some people do fine.
