So I just returned from my open enrollement. The hospital I work for is changing from a HSA to a PPO. Last year, when I got my pacemaker, my out of pocket exspenses totalted $10,000.00. I was reviewing the paperwork about a critical illness policy I had through UNUM. I called to see if the pacemaker might fall under critical illness. The representative said I could post a claim and she'd mail me the info and try it. She wouldn't lean one way or the other. I really don't think it will pay anything. Wondered if anyone has a policy like this and if they did pay?

I'm 43 and have had my pacemaker four weeks today. I'm looking forward to living another 50 years and this marvelous device inside me will help me do that.
If you don't ask....

Fairly new to all of this, only had my PM 3 days ago and so I don't feel even slightly qualified enough to give advice to others so please feel free to discard this entirely :)! Firstly, I must say that this is an amazing forum filled with some incredible people, I feel like I have recieved so much support and picked up some brilliant advice just from reading the discussions and comments on here, you guys have helped me so much through a really difficult time, thank you :).
Not that this is in any shape or form similar to insurance in people but I deal a huge amount with insurance policies in animals (I am a vet) and one thing is for sure unless it is spelled out in black and white in your policy (and even if it is!!) it is definitely worth asking the question. Only the insurance company themselves will know what their policy is for your own specific situation and there is a lot of detail in the small print that passes most of us by. What is the worst that can happen anyway, and even if they do say that you are not entitled to anything at least you have got that information straight from the horse’s mouth.
Just to add to this, I looked into critical illness cover a few years back and remember reading the cardiac arrhythmia section (there was a whole other bunch of variables for structural heart disease too) and can vaguely recollect that pacemaker insertion for the purpose of correcting an arrhythmia was not included in the policy, ICD placement following cardiac arrest and CRT-D were included I think but I definitely would not take my word for it.
As I said above different companies may offer different cover and only your own insurance company will be able to give you the answer for your own individual situation.
