PM And AFIB

In my case, a PM was implanted because I had a very low heart rate that prevented me from taking the medications that are prescribed to treat AFIB. Those medications can further lower your heart rate, so my PM was implanted and my low heart rate is set at 60 BPM. When they interrogate your PM on follow up doctors appointments the report that is generated will show the percent that your PM is supplementing your own heart rate. We are all different in that respect. Since you do also have AFIB, beta blocker medications may be prescribed. Also, a blood anticoagulant is usually prescribed to lower the chances that a rapid heart beat will churn the blood and create blood clots that could then cause a stroke. Your doctor's will work with you to fine tune your PM settings and adjust the dosage and types of medications that are prescribed for you. It takes some time and it is important to give your doctor accurate feedback about how you feel. PM club members recommend that you write down your questions before every follow up appointment so that you don't forget something. The PM Club is a good place to get support and help. Best wishes.

You go into AF

Depends upon the model of your PM, what settings it has, etc. I had AF before getting the PM and still have AF. You still have the problems with AF you always had, but the PM keeps your heart going. You don't feel very good but you won't necessarily die just because you have AF.
My PM has two programs that help control AF. One works about 10% of the time the other works about 80% of the time, the other 10% I'm still on my own. But after four years with the PM I'm feeling pretty good. Most of the time I'm AF free.
Hang in there, life gets better with the PM.
