rest assured if you ride out hurricane Irma you will likely have far more to worry about than your ICD. Unless of course your heart goes rampant due to stress there is no reason to worry about the ICD

No worries

Unless it starts raining large magnets or running electric motors. Then I'd worry about my CRT-D.

When evacuation is necessary

The chance that anything a hurricane could do would hurt or break your CRT-D is--no offense--ridiculous.

However, it's not outside the realm of probability that you could die in a hurricane. But if you did die, you can take some comfort in knowing the CRT-D would continue working fine.

Another way of saying it is, anywhere that you're safe, the CRT-D is safe.

Remember that the biggest danger from a hurricane is rising water. Once the water is rising it's too late to get out. And you can't always predict where the rising water will come from.

If you're not sure where you are is safe, don't use the CRT-D as an excuse to evacuate. It's too easy to shoot that one down. Use the power going out. That's bound to happen.

The only thing to be wary of is starting a generator. It's ok to be near it, just don't get too close for too long, start it or plug your appliance in then back off.

I see you are in Miami. I'm up the road in Palm Beach Co. We are staying and have never evactuated in the 25 years we've lived here, but I gotta say I would NOT be staying if I was in Broward or Miami-Dade. If the eye hits, it's going to make Andrew look minor.

Hurricanes

This was my first hurricane with an ICD.  When we lost power I moved to our safest room, and yes I did worry momentarily about being "cut off" from potential medical help.  But as I listened to the radio and tornado alerts, those became my focus.  Later, sleeping on the floor I realized that the ICD was doing its job so I needed to focus on other things.  I did worry about being without power and air conditioning and if the unusual heat would be bad for the ICD.  Reason prevailed and I abandoned that concern.  After 5 nights sleeping without power, I was so thankful when we got power, water and sewage restored.  My ICD was fine the whole time.  There are people in the Caribbean, Houston, TX area and other parts of Florida that I think about.  If I believed I needed to evacuate, I would have done so for personal safety reasons, not just because I have an ICD.  You are right to ask your doctor because people can have unique situations and you need to do what's right for your situation.  Now it looks like we might have another hurricane aiming our way.  The Weather Station and Pacemaker Club are my "new friends." 😀

Since I got my pacemaker, I don't pass out anymore! That's a blessing in itself.
