Coughing

Hello Everyone,

...Yet one more question from this Newbie.

I am one month post surgery for the implant of my Medtronic 2 Chamber PM for High AV Block-Sick Sinus Syndrome.

I am so sure that I feel my heart as it reacts to my PM. I find there is a temporary pressure/tightness in my chest, and then I cough in reaction.

Does this sound alarming or familiar to anyone? At my first interrogation, it happened, and the nurse said that nothing showed up on the interrogation.  I seem fine after; yet, it happens again.

My PM is firing 30% of the time in the top heart chamber and 2% in the bottom.

Thanks for your thoughts. Good to know you people are there to help.

Could be PAC

by Gotrhythm - 2017-08-04 13:20:30

I"m not a doctor and wouldn't presume to diagnose you, but what you describe sounds very like what a premature atrial contraction (PAC) feels like to me. I would describe the tightness/pressure as more of a sucking feeling, like sucking on a straw that is blocked on the other end. There is an overwhelming urge to cough which instantly relieves the feeling.

It happened once when my pacemaker was being interrogated, and that's what the tech, who happened to be watching the realtime action of my pacemaker at that moment, said my reaction correlated to.

Pacemakers record only what they are programmed to. It's possible that the nurse was not looking. If she only checked to see what was recorded, nothing might show up.

PACs like PVCs are generally considered to be benign. And, if you;re wondering, a pacemaker can do nothing about them.
