Pacing a lot more now

Hi I'm 48 IV had my Pacemaker for four years now, been for my check.up.today & was worried to learn I'm now pacing 100% , the first 3 years was only pacing 17% , then last check.up last year was 80% now it's 100% ,   does this mean my heart is getting worse ? Why would this happen , & could it go down again ?  any advice would be great .THANKYOU

In you member profile, you don't mention what your diagnosis is. I'm assuming SSS. As a rule rhythm disorders do not improve over time. Having a pacemaker will not prevent the underlying condition from worsening. That's the bad news.

The good news is, you have a pacemaker. Being paced at 17% or 80 or 100 will not make any difference in how you feel. Being paced at 100% does not mean your heart has completely stopped working. Even at 100% paced, your heart still has an intrinsic rhythm and is capable of beating on it's own. The point at which your heart beats on it's on when the pacemaker is turned off is one of the things the tech is checking when you have a pacemaker interrogation.

The main difference percentage makes is in battery life. Obviously at 100% you are using the battery faster than at 17%. But many other factors also affect battery life. Overall, as long as you feel well, the difference isn't worth worrying about.

Advice? There's nothing you can do to lower the percentage, and no benefit in doing so. So forget about it. Enjoy all the life your pacemaker gives you.

100% pacing ---- but grateful

Got my pace maker due to a left bundle branch block and bradycardia.  My interrogation reports have shown  an increasing of pacing from around 50% to 99.9% after 3 years.  The pace maker was inserted at the age of 65.  My attitude is "GEE I'M GLAD  I HAVE THE PACE MAKER" !!..--because I know I would not enjoy the quality of life I  have  without it!!  I fully trust "Sparky" to keep my heart rate a 60 or higher when my activity level requires it..   When I asked my electrophysiologist if I really need the pace maker ------ he said I would be needing it in the future.  I , too, was surprised how rapidly my rhythm  changed and often wondered if having the pace maker accelerated the situation---------in other words , does having a pace maker somewhat weaken the hearts natural ability to perform???  A good question the this board...

Then the bigger question to ask is why do we have these health issues at all? And of course there is no good answer to your question or mine.  So I accept my failing electrical system. I probably had the problem for years but it got much worse, it seems, overnight.

I have paced at 100% since receiving the pm. So for me I am just thankful that the problem was found before I had heart damage or a serious injury from a fall when blacking out.

I work hard daily to accept what is and count my blessings.

Thanks all

I am just now 40 but have had these blackouts all my life. I am thrilled with the pacer and would do it all over again.
