Pregnant with Complete Heart Block

Hello!

I just celebrated my 1 year anniversary since being diagnosed with complete heart block and I am happy to say that my husband and I are now expecting our first child.

I definitely noticed the heart rate increase, which is totally normal, but over the first trimester, I've noticed some strange heartbeats - feels sort of like one or two escape beats (don't know whether that's the correct term) in a row that happen out of the blue a few times each day. I've noticed these mostly in the evening when I'm tired or sitting on the couch or after I get into bed.

Any of you have any experience with symptoms like these? Anything to worry about? Any idea what an underlying cause could be?

K- Congradulations on expecting! I've had my pacemaker since September. If you are having some abnormal beats, you could send in a transmission for them to view. Sorry, I haven't experienced the abnormal beats. I also have complete heart block. Both my pregnancies were prior to my pacemaker.

pregnancy weirdness

All sorts of weird things happen to our bodies when we are expecting! It sounds like you are describing PVC's (little half beats between the full beats). They feel odd but are  harmless. An interrogation would confirm this is what's going on and make sure it's nothing that needs to be watched.

I had two pregnancies after being paced for CHB, my heart was not a factor at all. Normal pregnancies and deliveries. The only concession to my heart was a cardiac monitor during labor. We are lucky in that the pacer more or less fixes our problem, leaving us with a normal heart beat.

Good luck!!!!!!

Thank you!

Thank you both for the advice.

TraceyE, I'd actually been reading up on some of your older posts on pregnancy, and your experience is reassuring. Up to the point of getting pregnant, apart from some issues with exercising that had been more or less resolved, I hadn't been experiencing any odd symptoms, and so these beats caught me off guard when they started happening.

I bet you're right - PVCs would make sense. As it happens, I had an annual physical with my PCP earlier today, and to be on the safe side she scheduled me for a pacemaker clinic and cardiology visit next week. She also suggested it could have to do with putting pressure on the vena cava (is that the right term? a major vein that can get squeezed by a growing uterus) when I'm laying on my back. We'll see what they say. I'm not too worried, but I do feel better knowing that I'll be checking in with the cardiologist in a few days.

Thank you again for the responses. The Pacemaker Club has helped give me so much peace of mind over the last year. I don't feel so alone. Thank you all for your support!

vena cava is the one in the chest where they run the leads, but I've heard of something getting squished during pregnancy. Heck, everything gets squished during pregnancy! lol  Good thing to check in with the cardio, piece of mind is invaluable.

Pregnancy with a pacemaler

Hi,  I had a baby boy after getting a pacemaker way back in 1987.  Just keep in touch with your pacemaker clinic and have them check it every month.   You can do remote pacemaker checks now over the phone which is soooo much easier now.  That option was not available in 1987 so i had to go in every month to have it checked, but I am also 100% dependant on it.  You will do just fine !!!
