I have to go from the UK to America next month and have booked a flight with United Airlines.
Could someone help me . When exactly do I show them my pacemaker card :-
- when they first ask me to get off ?
- while they are dragging me down the aisle or
- after they have injured me and thrown me on to the runway ?
I have asked Medtronic head-office in the UK but they were of no help.

United Airlines

I suggest you wait until they are offering money to customers to give up their seats on overbooked flight. Then name your price as the cost in America of new pacemaker together with associated medical staff and hospital bill.
Wait until other passengers are videoing you down the aisle

Then whip out your card screaming "you are going to damage my pacemaker" in your poshest English accent for maximum reaction of passengers and subsequent generous compensation offer. And if you don't want the free flights for life, I'll accept on your behalf ...

metal detector

Even though it should not affect your device (was told by my cardilogist i can just walk through them), the point is do not walk through the metal detector. I have not flown overseas in a long time (the UK is to me overseas), but in the US when they do the first check of your ID and ticket before security to keep you from getting in the line that feeds into the detectors. I tell them then, some airports have a special line you can go through or some will pat you down in a room instead of send you around the devices. A lot of them now just send you on to the normal line then before going through the detector (the TSA and i assume other security does not like you playing the I have metal hide and seek game) tell the person by the xray machine for your carry on that you have a pacemaker. they will call some one over to either pat you down or wand you or both, you walk around the machines and follow instrucitons. In some places they have the xray machines which last I read were not yet determined to be safe for us but airport security is always right...right?
Same goes for metal detectors in goverment buildings or sporting events, concerts, etc. tell them you have a pacemaker and go around. It think it has been decades since the machine will do anything to you, it is more of a case that you will set the thing off and then they have to do the wheres the metal thing. I bought a t-shirt once related to tsa hide and seek, but never had the guts to wear it to the airport...
I dont fly as much as I used to but I never actually needed to present any of my cards or identification related to the pacer I simply told them I had one and they assumed I really did. stil good to have, not that those cards actually prove you have one either...
Happy Ending !

Thank you for all the kind advice about negotiating airports with a pacemaker . My actual query though was how to survive a United Airlines flight without getting beaten up.
I have just heard on the radio that the poor ticket-paying passenger sustained a broken nose, concussion and two smashed teeth. I wonder how many noughts there will be in the eventual financial settlement ? Still I'm sure that the United Airlines staff smiled and said " Have a nice day " as he went off to hospital.
What is the happy ending you may wonder ? .... my pacemaker and I have successfully cancelled our United Airlines flight and re-booked with another carrier ( British Airways )
Cheers

I am an unabasahed American....

...but am Embarrased beyond tears at the actions of my countrymen! ALL of them involved at O'Hare. Lt/Cdr Butch O'Hare's bronze bust in the lobby must have been crying at that incident!
You all in the UK probably missed the press conference by the victim's lawyer lasterday as he tried his case in front of the American public. It was masterfull, at bets. He raked all tyhe involved buffoons over a bed of white hot coals created from the stupidityt logs created by UAL & the cops that performed the jack-booted thuggery for them. Another excample of absolute power developing absolute brutality. I suspect that the lawsuit, IF it is ever presented, will involve the police dept involved, as well it should.
UAL wants this thing to go away ASAP, so will settling out of court very fast - IF they are smart. I watched the presser for a bit & wondered why some guy i a three-piece-suit didn't walk up behind the lawyer, tap him on the shoulder & say "Psst - how much do you want to settle? .....We will pay you double that for you to quit now & go home!"
Did you hear of UAL's second stroke of bad luck lasterday? On a flight from Mexico to Calgary (Canada, for the geographically handicapped), a passenger had a small scorpion drop out of the overhead bin & land on his head. He brushed it off & into his plate. "Dinner" was obviously being served. Not knowing much about scorpions, he foolishly picked it up again & it did what all scorpions do when disturbed - stung him. It was described in the article as"Honey-colored." Bad sign! The black ones are mild, but the light colored can be very dangerous - sometimes causing death.

At security

hi Ian. As you are queuing up for security and everyone is putting their hand lugguage through the scanner. Just show them your card before you have to enter the metal detector. Depends if your flying from Gatwick or Heathrow but they will either make you walk through the X-ray machine instead or just let you go through without any checks. Have a lovely holiday :)
