Dressing

I am 3 days post PM placement. I am removing the dressing tomorrow. I still have a lot of bruising and soreness. I know I have staples, so I plan on leaving it open to air. Anyone else have a lot of underarm bruising? No signs of infection. Any tips on showering.  Denise

Denise I am a 60 year old mountain biker and I can count on one hand how many times I have been bruised in my life. This was one of them. Its normal and your body will absorb it up in a few weeks.

Underarm bruising and showering

Hi Denise. I'm 7 days post placement and yes lots of underarm bruising. If you have a bath it would be good to run that but not a full bath so you don't submerge the incision site. Hope your feeling good soon :)

Post Implant instructions

I am surprised that you apparently have not received very specific instructions regarding the timing for removing dressings and wound care.  In my case it was 10 days before the dressings were removed and there were specific instructions about using a presurgical scrub like Betadine or Dyna-Hex to wash the area. Staples or not, removing the dressing after only 3 days seems awfully early and it is important to prevent infection.  Normally a breathable bandage and the application of some of the antibacterial ointments is recommended until the scar is completely healed.  The leads go directly from the PM into your blood stream and heart and could be a possible conduit for any infection.  I recommend that you double check post op procedures with your doctor or his nursing staff.

When I had my implant the instructions were to remove all dressings after 3 days (multiple layers). I kept mine on for about a week because things didn't seem quite right to remove it so soon, everything healed fine though.

......I would be more surprised if you had no bruising...PM implantation involves a lot of 'rough house' manipulation.

Artist makes a good point Keep the area dry if you can and keep you eye on the site.

I wasn't really self-conscious about it. I didn't even know I had one until around six or seven years old. I just thought I had a rock in my side.
