Kids pacemaker

Hi my son is 9 years old and has a pacemker for third degree heart block. He's had it for nearly 5 years now and is fit and well.

He's had 2 episodes now of his airway becoming blocked and being unable to breathe in his sleep. The first time it happened I panicked a bit and thought he was having a seizure but he came around out of his sleep quickly and was ok but a little shaky. I took him to the hospital and he was throughly checked and all was ok. It happened again yesterday morning and was once again over very quickly.

I was wondering if any other people have experienced this or know anything about it. Could it be some form of sleep apnea? We are seeing the doctor later today and I've left a message for my son's cardiologist. I'm just looking for a little reassurance really as I do worry about him. Any information would be much appreciated.

Kind regards

Vanessa xx

Poor Mom & Poor Kid!

We mothers have a hard time with such things don't we. And justifiably so!

I'm curious how you knew it was happening?  Did he suddenly gasp or choke?  There could be a lot of reasons for something like this and sleep apnea could be one. Is he overweight?  My first thought was enlarged adenoids and/or tonsils.

I'm sure your pediatrician will have some good guesses as to what might be the problem. If his PM is working (I.e., battery isn't dead), it's a great comfort to know that his heart will keep right on beating.

Let us know what you discover.
