New Pacemaker

Hi all

Totally new to this site and found it by chance (I'm glad I have, as its answered alot of questions that I had).

I had my pacemaker fitted August 2016, after having some strange passing out sessions earlier in the year - it was if someone just turned the power off on me. They werent very frequent, over a 6 month period i had 4 inceidents (the first 2 i put down to over woking, not enough sleep etc etc)

After visting the DR they found i had left bundle branch block and also an extra vein in going to my heart (I was born with it apparently, 42 years to find it lol) I've never had any healf issues before.

They put implant monitor it turns out my heart would stop for 10 or 15 seconds hence now having the pacemaker. Since having it in I've not felt really any different - which i think is good thng? I still a little confused what casuses my heart to stop though - never really got a straight answer from the consultant, part from getting a pacemaker.

My main thing now is I really need to start working out, as I'm starting to pile on the pounds. Does anyone have any advice??

Cheers guys

What's causing my heart to stop

Hi,

I'm sorry you didn't get any clear answers from your doctor.  What was causing my heart to stop is that I have SSS.  There's a sinus node in your heart.  The electric signals don't work right, so it doesn't pace your heart the way it should.  That's why we're sent to the EP (electrophysiologist), because as my cardiologist says, "I'm just the plumber."  So, it's an electrical problem we have that causes the pauses in our hearts.  My heart would stop so long at night that I'd wake up gasping for air.  During the day, I had no idea I was pausing so much, but apparently it was long enough to get me in pretty quick for the pacemaker.

I started working out about six months after my implant.  I took cycle classes, started lifting lighter weights to begin with, and played a lot of pickleball.  The gym will make you feel better.

I've seen many posts about people being concerned about exercise after having a device so thought I would let you know that yesterday I raced my first marathon since having my pacemaker fitted in fall 2004.
