pacemaker longevity

Hi everyone, I had my nearly 29 year old pacemaker replaced on tuesday the 1st of march.I had to have a new add on atrial lead.I did not have to have a temporary pacer wire, as they said I have my own heart rate of 50.The surgery was not bad, it took a bit of pulling out.I had it done tuesday lunch time, and was home for 8.30 in the evening. When I got home I had a tickly cough, I coughed quite hard, I am a bit concerned could the coughing have dislodged the lead . Hopefully everthing will be ok when I go for my check in a few weeks
Very relieved its over.

I bet you are Manduf. I wonder if you set a record with having the same PM for 29 years. Did you ask your Docs? You may have earned a write up in the medical books! You certainly have earned it on this site.

Glad to hear it went well.

A search of this club site answers your question in Feb 2010. Go to the upper right grey box and enter 'cough'
I enclose a copy of the last answer for your convenience:

Cough with dislodgement

I have never seen it happen, but never say never. The leads are typically sutured into the muscle, so as long as that was done correctly, then the leads shouldn't move much.

As far as dislodgement, the helix (the screw on the end on the lead if you have active fixation leads) goes into the muscle of the heart. The typical rate of dislodgement is around 1-3% depending on your sources.

It would be unlikely to have the lead come out with coughing.
