pacaker Longevity

Hi has anyone on this site evet heard of a pacemaker generator lasting 29 years.That is how long mine has been in.I was 23 when I had it put in, it is a dual chamber, and now I am 52 years old.It is now due for changing, and possibly new lead.The medical proffession cant give me an answer, they say they dont know till it comes out, as it does not give information loke the new ones of today.

Something doesn't sound right. As time goes on there is advancement in battery longevity with the newer models but the average now is about 8 - 13 years if you're lucky.

I think you need to get some answers.....and another doctor.

Your device lasted 26 years in someone so 29 years is certainly possible!!

So now I have to change my opinion and say....they don't make 'em like they used to.

Hi thanks for your reply.I am worried now, what if I never really needed it in the first place.A few years ago they told me a woman who had the same model as me , that hers lasted 20 years. The hospital I go to is a top teaching hospital, they do bypass surgery.I dont know what to think.My pacemaker model is Delta T, and it was made by CPI in America, I am from the UK

They told me that the new ones only last about 8 years average but they do more for your heart.I have been worried sick, especially with the doctors not knowing why it has lasted this long.Thankyou very much.

I never heard of a device lasting 20+ years so I learned something too.

Wow, I am amazed at the life of your Pacemaker. I learned something new also! It does sound as though you should have an easy time of it when they remove the old one. Since it lasted so long you don't have a lot of extra hardware that will present problems. If you need a new lead that can just leave the old one in place. That is commonly done. It also sounds like you may be able to use the new leadless PM. You should discuss all your options with your doctor to determine what you are most comfortable with.

Hi david, , thanks for your reply.I had my new pacemaker put in on tuesday the 1st of march
I had to have a new add on atrial lead.I did not have to have a temporary pacing wire , as they said I have my own heart rate of 50.It took a bit of pulling out.I had it done at lunch time and went home about 8.30 in the evening.When I got home I had a tickly cough, and coughed quite hard a while.I am a bit concerned could coughing cause my lead to dislodge.
