I drink about 4 ounces of 80 proof rum per day, mixed with cola! Can anyone tell me if my heart health is in danger by doing this? If so, why? What should my limit be?
Thank you,
Jim

I may be wrong but I think that 4 ounces of rum a day is around 30 units of alcohol per week .
Alcohol becomes a real threat to your health if you drink more than your liver can cope with and this limit is normally considered to be around 30 units a week for men so if you exceeded your current levels this may worry some doctors. Above these levels liver and heart disease may become more likely
But we are all different and all have different body weights and metabolism. These differences can affect the way we process alcohol.
Many governments and " health experts " seem to pluck safe drink limits out of the air with no evidence to back them up. Here in the UK a max of 21 units per week for man has been recommended ( without any real medical evidence ) and there are now moves to reduce the recommended max to around 15 units per week
As a spirits drinker myself , I believe that what you are doing is absolutely fine but there will be some who may disagree ( I think the cola may be worse for you than the rum ) .
Having a PM does not have a bearing on how much alcohol you can drink although alcohol can trigger arrhythmias in some people
As Tracey says your doctor may know things about your health / medications etc which may influence his advice but his personal prejudices may determine his advice more than anything else
Cheers

Some studies say a little daily is ok. Some say it's good for us. Others say it's bad for us. Some medications and underlying conditions make it less safe. Everyone is different so only your doctor can tell you what's right for you.
