Repair Technician

I am a slot machine repair technician at a casino. These machine have power to them and some speakers have good sized magnets on them. I will be getting my ICD implanted soon. Can I still work as a repair technician on these machines with an ICD?

On the ICD side

ICD's are a little different from the PM's. While I don't think you'll have a problem we'll need to hear from the ICD side.

On the PM side, you shouldn't have any problem. I was moving speakers that were 4 foot high with multiple speakers and multiple magnets in them. Because they were awkward to move, I had to actually lift and carry them with the case next to my PM. No problems.

There is some speculation the magnets need to be the size of the magnets used at the PM reading and they need to be lying on the PM before it will cause a problem.

My PM is Medtronics and their data sheet says to keep magnets a minimum of six inches away from the PM. So that gives you a distance. If you get one of those pocket rulers that are six inches long, it will give you an idea of how close something has to be before it may cause you a problem. Most of the stuff I work with is kept at more than six inches so I don't really worry about it.

I also volunteer in a woodshop running all of the woodshop equipment. Was doing Kreg pocket screw holes one day, forgot about my PM and was leaning on a running DeWalt drill. My PM was on the drill as it was running and I had no problems. PM just kept on running.

So, unless there's some quirk with the ICD's of which I'm not aware, I don't think you'll have any problems. However, I'll let the ICD people give you the final ruling.

.....................regarding speaker magnets ,you really need to be a Roadie for Motorhead to have any real worries....Well apart from the risk of deafness..!!

The Six-inch-rule is a convenient one....the fact is that current devices are very safe from such inflences...

Best wishes

Give the Electrophysiologist who will be implanting your ICD and ask about magnets. Since you do not know what type of ICD you will receive or the make you probably will not get answers from the mfgs.

Gather the information about the magnets you would be in contact with. I know musicians who preform with high volume instruments and huge speakers are fine and safe to work around the equipment of their trade. Mainly we are supposed to stay away from magnets that pick up cars/scrap metal. big turbines things like that. Normal day to day equipment is fine. About the worst that will happen is not feeling well or feeling odd, move away from the source and all is well again.

Hi, When I got my iPad, I called Medtronic, and they said to keep it 17 inches away from pacemaker, so with what your doing with magnets, would check out all the facts. God bless. G

You know you're wired when...

You play MP3 files on your pacer.

Without this little machine, we would not be here.
