Medical Alert Jewellery

Hello =)

Being new to all this PM lark, I wonder whether it's worth getting a medical alert bracelet or necklace made. I'd appreciate any views and advice.

Stay healthy,
Lynsey.

I think I'll get one, or some like TraceyE. I kind of feel like I want to shout about the presence of my little PM friend, I'm proud to be in this gang and if it helps me receive the right treatment in my time of need when I'm unable to talk, then all the better.

I have one!

I have a very simple, easily readable, bracelet with a slightly curved plate, nice durable chain and lobster claw clasp that never comes undone. I put it on two weeks after my PM was implanted and have never taken it off. It goes in the shower with me, keeps clean and is very comfortable. I don't even know it is there and wear it on my left arm with my watch. I am often alone and want to tip the scale in my favor if it comes to being semi conscious and not able to speak out about my medical condition. We are told to always keep our PM ID cards with us, but really, do we do that when we are walking the dog or mowing the lawn etc. I got my bracelet on ebay after looking at a wealth of models and prices. They custom cut the length to allow for a half inch slack so that it is very comfortable.

Rare

I think, after reading this, I will get one too. I have a pacemaker AND a rare heart 'defect'. Might be good to forewarn them!

Hi,

I asked my Dr. if I should get one after my implant and he told me it was not necessary. He told me that in an emergency most paramedics are trained to look at your chest first to see if you have a scar which is a tell-tale sign of a heart device.

Good luck to you!

I had decided that they are unnecessary anyway and my cardiologist had the same view.

If you look at Polls on here you will see that 55 % of people don't believe in them and 45 % do, so if you have the urge to spend your money, go for it; if you want to save your money you will be in the majority !

Cheers

scars

I would not depend on an EMT looking for a scar. Mine isn't obvious or in the usual place so even if they looked they probably wouldn't identify it, and I'm not the age yet where they would even think to look. OTOH, having a bracelet on is no guarantee they'll see it. I wear one anyway, better safe than sorry.

I never wore one until we had a member here who was an emergency responder, she scared me into it. She said it can affect how they cut us out of an accident. If we are identified as cardiac, we are always transported with the lights on. And most important, it affects where they take us. Not every hospital is equipped to do surgery on us. In an emergency situation, you wouldn't want to be transported twice. And last, we had a member who was awake but out of it after an accident. She didn't think to say anything about her pm until they had her headed for an mri. What if she'd been unconscious? Odds of needing it are slim but I'd rather wear it and never need it than not have it when it could have saved time.

Mine are pretty. I have quite the collection, figure if I have one to match everything there's a better chance I'll always wear it. I have tags in several colors from here
http://www.n-styleid.com/charms-and-id-tags/medical-id-tags.html
I have a few bracelets from there and others from Laurens Hope. My aunt beads, she made me some others. I have a silicon one for running and the beach from GoSportId. I have an account with American Medical ID for an online medical record. All I have on my tags is my name, PACEMAKER and the phone number and pass code for my online record. That has my emergency contact, insurance, prescriptions, drs, even my surgical history. It's easier to change it online than get new tags when something changes.

I have one too

I put it on when I got home from implant and it has never come off. In an accident I may be separated from my wallet but hopefully not my left arm. Mine just says pacemaker, was not expensive and gives my a little peace of mind.

I wear a bracelet

Hello everyone, this is Denise. I'm 46 and I've had a PM for one year. I ordered a medical bracelet from Amazon. I wanted one that was fashionable and not the usual medial looking kind. Mine has sterling silver balls and I never take it off. I also ordered one from Laurens Hope that I love but can't wear it in the shower. When I got out of the hospital, my brother was the one to suggest that I wear one. I listened to him and the bracelet makes me feel secure. I was diagnosed with vasal vagel syncope or sick sinus after passing out 12 times in the hospital and flat lining twice. I gave my nurses a run for their money and am so thankful to be alive.

Thanks for letting me share. I'm glad to have found this club. It's hard when no one really understands.

I am just thankful that I am alive and that even though I have this pacemaker it is not the end of the world.
