It has been a year since I had my PM implant and I have been dreading having my yearly mammogram. There seems to be so many unexplained or questionable lumps and bumps after the PM implant and I really wanted to get checked out. I just feared that the examiner would do some of that painful stretching and squishing and that it would hurt and perhaps injure the PM leads or push the PM out of the pocket. It turned out to be a piece of cake. No problems with pain in the PM area and the examiner showed me the digital images and the clear outline of the bottom of the PM. So, for all the ladies like me that might be putting off their mammograms, there seems to be no reason to worry. Now to hope my results were good since I am the middle daughter of two other sisters both of whom have had breast cancer.

I am scheduled for my annual mammogram in a week and it's been a source of great concern for me since this is the first one since my PM implant. I vividly remember past mammograms with pulling and squishing that reaches all the way up to my clavicle so I have been more than a little concerned.
So thanks very much for weighing in; I needed it!
Wishing you good results.

Just make sure you let the tech know about your PM so they can be gentle by the device. They no longer grab my clavicle on that side....less pain.
Sometimes they can't see behind my device so they will also do an ultrasound.

My last Mammo was 4 years ago, first one after PM and they keep bugging me to have another one.
I had to have a double appt. due to PM, I have no idea why. It was the new digital mammo. When she got to the side of PM she pushed over hard. I yelled. In surprise she asked me if it hurt. I replied that I would not have yelled if it did not hurt!
When all was over I discovered that the leads had shifted, nearly under my arm, and sticking out a lot more. They have been so uncomfortable ever since and if I am not careful will catch on things. Part of the problem is that I am very thin.
EP raised his eyebrows when he saw them but said it would not affect working of PM. In other words put up with it until replacement which is now about 6 years away.
So I am reluctant to go through it again.

I forgot

I completely forgot to tell them I had a PM at my last mammogram - although I did mention it in the paperwork I filled out ahead of time which confirms my suspicion that nobody ever reads that stuff anyway. She noticed it in one of the x-rays and said if she had known she would have been more gentle. I didn't think she wasn't gentle in the first place, it was uncomfortable but I expected as much. She was surprised that she hadn't noticed my scar but it isn't even that noticeable anymore. However once she seen the PM she didn't clamp down as hard on that side for the remaining x-rays and I got a notice in the mail saying it was too dense and I need to have a different kind of test next year.

I'm 44, active and have had my device for two years. I love it as I can run again and enjoy working out without feeling like I'm an old man.

I'm glad to hear my post was timely for you. I hope you have a good examiner and your exam is pain free. I think she was using that new digital equipment and maybe they do not need to compress so much. I made sure to tell the examiner about my concerns. Please let us know how your procedure went.
