Weight Gain/Beta Blockers

It's taking some time for me to gain more energy after my PM surgery 3 months ago. Before my surgery I was doing pretty good slowly bringing my weight down from 167 to 152 (I am 5'8", 73 yr. old female). But, I have gained 6 lbs. in the last three months following surgery. I know I have to work harder at trying to resume the level of exercise I was doing before, but wonder if weight gain is a typical post surgical situation and whether this might be a side effect of the Beta Blockers I am taking. I think too that I have been rewarding myself after the surgical ordeal with too many tasty treats. Is weight gain common?

Depends on which beta blocker

Hi Artist . Some of the older beta blockers e.g Tenormin ( atenolol) , Lopressor ( atenolol) and Inderal ( propranolol)
are notorious for causing weight gain in the first few months of taking them.

Weight gains of 4 to 5 lbs are quite common, but more recently discovered beta blockers are less likely to do this.

Too many "tasty treats " plus one of these older beta blockers would certainly expand the waistline ! Which one are you taking ?

Actually

Actually I feel so much better that I have a bigger appetite than I had before. Consequently I eat more and gain weight.

The beta blockers may factor in, but for me, it's the increased appetite.

Thanks for your comments. I'm taking 50 mg of Flecainide twice daily and 5 mg of Bisoprolol. I thought they might be like steroids and cause fluid retention and weight gain. They list so many side effects for the drugs, I thought it might be more meaningful to check personal experiences.
I would rather have it be just the result of diet and less exercise since I will probably need medication the rest of my life. At least I can control my cookie intake and get moving more!
