Induction Hobs

I was just about to purchase one of these having been reminded by my partner that our existing Ceramic hob only has 3 hobs working and I had said we would get a new one several months ago.

By chance I read that Induction hobs and pacemakers are a problem in close proximity.

Do you guys know whether this is actually an issue, something left over from back in the day, or perhaps the usual over cautious advice we get that would keep us in our bath chairs for the rest of our days if we listened to all of it.

I have a Sorin Reply DR fitted just over a year ago for slow resting Hbeat and very occasional "missed beat".

I could of course buy the hob and then claim exemption from all cooking however, I guess that would not go down at all well :)

Many Thanks Nick

For those of us in the New Country a hob is a cook top.

Nick, do you know of anyone that has one where you could see if it had any effect?

Or any store that has one setup for demo's.

Also there are some portable ones that are used for cooking demo's. Maybe you can find a place that uses them. Or maybe renting one from a place that does party rentals.

Induction or electric?

If the cook top is the "new" induction style they are intro-ing here in the states, they say NO ! It runs on magnetic pulses. See no reason for a problem with electric tops/ or gas (thats what I use -propane)

Hi Nick Good to hear from you again !

If you do a search of "Induction Hobs" you will find some of the previous posts. Many people seem to use them without any problems but, as they emit quite a strong electro-magnetic field ,it is probably best not to lie too intimately on top of the hob( only do that with your partner ! )
Most of the manufacturers recommend keeping your PM at least 2 feet away from the hob when it is being used.

Interestingly I have a neighbour with one and whenever I go in her kitchen my Medtronic PM makes a beeping noise I wrote to Medtronic about it and they couldn't explain it. my neighbour thinks it is my mating call but, seriously, my PM is affected by her hob in some way.

I hope you have no problems if you decide to get one; we are all different it seems

History Revisited - Ian's PM

by donr - 2016-02-16 03:02:06

Ian, Nick: I recall that Ian & I exchanged several comments on this subject a couple yrs ago.

We decided that the Induction hob is safe for PM hosts under the following conditions:

1) Don't, as Ian says, lie on top of the hob w/ your PM down, unless the hob is turned off. Turn that sucker on & it will play hob w/ your PM! (Pun intended!)

2) When cooking on the hob, use a CORRECTLY sized pot, pan, skillet, whatever. If the cooking vessel is too small in diameter, magnetic field will "Escape" from the hob around the vessel & MAY (Note that I did not say WILL) affect your PM. The bottoms of cooking vessels rated for induction hobs are special magnetic material and "Capture" the magnetic field from the hob. They are also very FLAT so that there is minimal space between the vessel & hob upper surface.

3) Do NOT energize the hob till the filled cooking vessel is atop the hob. It is not like a normal resistive electric hob - you cannot/do not pre-heat it.

4) If you can, find some place where you can approach an active hob - very slowly - top see what, if any effect it has on your PM. it should not affect you. But you never know. We all react differently.

Induction hobs

Have one.
Have a St Jude PM
Manufacturer of PM said keep 2 feet away from the induction ring.
Had hob for 6 years- no problems.
Just remember it is the pan you use to cook with and not your body!

I really like my induction hob as the heat is well controlled and it is easy to clean. I would certainly have another, though the present hob is as good as new.

Happy cooking, I would not hesitate to use an induction hob with a PM provided you don't lean over the rings.

Thanks all

I would like us to have an induction hob and it seems likely to be ok.

Not aware of any friends with one but will try and find one I can approach and see what happens it appears I won't die and so long as the PM doesn't have its settings obliterated/messed with I remain hopeful.

Obviously If I cannot "cook" on it then it's a none starter. I would be accused of serious kitchen avoidance....on the other hand...

You know you're wired when...

You have a shocking personality.
