Pacemaker removal

I was wondering why you had the pacemaker and how long? I had one implanted 5 months ago for 2nd degree heart block that only occurs with strenuous exercise (mainly biking up steep hills). Now it doesn't seem to occur and I'm pacing at zero %. I was wondering if it doesn't pace for 3 or 4 years, if it would ever be removed. Someone posted that there is a 1% chance of infection of idle PMs but I wondered how that would be any different than when they are pacing. Let me know what your doctor says and how long you have no longer needed it! I have read in this site of others who have had them removed but not long term follow up.

Good luck! Would be a dream come true to no longer need a PM!

No longer need pacemaker

I had a pacemaker from 2000 to 2007. It caused me many problems with short circuits, etc. In 2007, we turned it off; then the battery died. I chose not to have the PM removed due to the risk of infection and the danger in removing the leads. I have been doing much better since it stopped working. My doctor told me that "WHATEVER CAUSED ME TO HAVE THE PACEMAKER IN THE FIRST PLACE, WAS NO LONGER A PROBLEM". I think that was his way of saying that I never needed the PM in the first place.

My eight year old son had a pacemaker since he was 6 months old. He does very well, plays soccer, baseball, and rides his bike. I am so glad he is not ashamed of his pacemaker. He will proudly show his "battery" to anyone.
