Uninsured

Hello All!
My name's Wendy and i'm 20 years young and a college student living with roommates in an apartment for school.
I've had my pacemaker for about 5 years now. I got it implanted on June 19, 2009, due to cardiac arrest.
So i got my health insurance taken away from me, and i've applied and applied and for some reason i get denied and can't get covered.
I havent gotten my heart checked for almost a year already because i have no health insurance.
Does anyone have information on how to get insured or something?
Thanks in Advance!

Without more information (some of which may be too personal and confidential), it is difficult to make suggestions. Here are some websites that may be useful, though:

Good luck.

Most colleges offer Heath insurance and require students to have it. Check with your student life or fees office.

Also since you are 19 they may be denying you since most can remain on parents insurance until you are 26.

Last, you should have some sort of student health center where you can at least see a primary for a nominal fee (it was $10 for me 15 years ago). I knew of some students while I was in school who had complex issues with no insurance and the Student Health center would get them in to see specialists for free or low cost if their conditions required it. It took some time for non-emergent, but there are options.

Check into what your school offers, you might be surprised!

Covered California and MediCal

Hi Wendy, I see that you are in California.

You can be covered on your parents' plan until you are 26 if they have insurance, but I don't think it is required. If you are financially independent and earn less than $15,857/yr you may qualify for MediCal. The tricky part there might be getting a ruling that you are financially independent from your parents while you are in college. Another sticky wicket is if they determine that you and your roommates constitute a household, in which case the numbers change. With an income up to $62K you can get premium assistance through Covered California. Check the Covered California web site or call them for guidance.

Student Health is also a good idea. It was my sole source of medical care during my 9 years of college because the Affordable Care Act didn't exist and I could not be on my parents' policy.
