Hi! Does anyone has been shocked while driving?
I'm driving a lot with my child and afraid that I'll be shocked while driving and get into the accident. How people drive with ICDs?

Driving

As long as you feel well and have Doctor's clearance you will drive as you normally do. I find the strap across my device uncomfortable most times and makes me aware of my device but I do not dwell on the "what ifs". There are some things we just do not have control over.....as the World reminds us everyday.
My ICD device is almost 6 years old and I have not been shocked. We are all different with different heart problems. If I do get shocked, I am not looking forward to it but I know it will have saved my life.
Try to concentrate on getting your heart problems fixed and not the what ifs down the road. We are very lucky we live in times where we have this amazing technology.
Of course, continue to ask your questions. It's good to gain knowledge and should help to put your mind at ease.
It's great you found this site before your implant. I wish I had. You'll be fine, keep us posted.

I am 100% pacemaker dependant and have been all my life. I try not to think about how a little metal box keeps me alive - it would drive me crazy. So I lead a very active life.
Shocked - to be or not to be

Dear Shocked:
I was not only afraid to drive, but I was afraid to hold a baby, ride a motorcycle, anything where I might harm someone else because of being shocked and going off the road, hitting another vehicle or harming a passenger I had. Driving especially. that was four years ago. I talked with a nurse practitioner about my fears soon after I got my device, and she told me that life happens, and I couldn't live my life afraid because of this device in my chest. I could walk out of the doctor's office and get hit by a bus! Not that I'd want to go that way. But now I don't even think about it. I am a praying woman, so I pray that God keeps me and others around me safe, and then I go on. It takes time to feel "normal". Well, it took me awhile. Now I don't dwell on the driving thing. Once in a while I think about it, but then I move on.
Hope I gave you some encouragement.
