Pre-medication for Dental Work

Went to the dentist recently and he said he wouldn't work on me unless I pre-medicated (there on the spot) with 4 pills of anti-biotics. Is this common?

I may have to pull a few articles to educate him, but maybe he's just old school.

Used to be

Used to be common but isn't done very much any more.

I don't get any special treatment with my dentist. Just the usual brush multiple times a day, floss often.

Most likely he will say you don't need it. Then ask him to write a quick note to the Dentist stating it is not necessary. That will cover everybody and your Dentist will feel better. He's only looking out for you.

I have to take it now anyway, due to a hip implant. My Ortho is insisting on it. For some reason, the bacteria likes hip implants.

You don't say in your profile why you have the pm, but unless you've had valve or joint replacement surgery, it's more than likely unnecessary. No need to pull articles, tell him to look up ADA recommendations. Both AHA and ADA stopped recommending it years ago.

....all these guys are spot-on..this remains a real 'rump' of post Medico-Legal -Insurance ignorance.

I have a replacement Aortic Valve and no longer need to take THREE..repeat THREE Grams...not milligrams,.. of Amoxicillin before any dental treatment !!!

We , Globally, are stuffed full of antibiotics..be it by prescription or by the food that we eat...

My very best drug free wishes...I have no problem with drugs...

I just like to save them till best !!!

Was never recommended

Hi!

The important thing is, premedication for pacemaker/ICD patients - with no other heart issues, like mechanical valves - NEVER EVER was recommended, not even in the old guidelines.

Ever since I had a heart condition I have to take antibiotics before going to the dentist an hour before the appointment.

I was born with a heart condition and had open heart surgery many years ago. I always had to have an antibiotic before dental procedures if the dentist was going in to the gum to extract a tooth or whatever. Then a few years ago my dentist said rules had changed and he no longer needed to give me an antibiotic.
I'm a newbie on this site. I just got my Medtronic dual lead PM 4 weeks ago so it will be interesting to see if I need to take them again before dental treatment.
