PM is fine, you are not

Bally: I just read ALL the posts and comments you have made.

You are on your second PM for CHB and you had the first PM put in when you were about 14 years old.

A question for you. Did you ever feel this way before having the new PM put in?

This is an important question to me. It will tell me if there is a chance that the problems may come from the new PM.

Your first post was in October - about 3 months ago. Your posts have been more and more frequent . This tells me one important fact. You are suffering from anxiety and stress (also called fear) from feeling something in your heart that no one can or will explain.

You went to see your Dr and he checked the PM and it is working the way it should. You still feel the Palpitations, even with a properly working PM and this causes fear, anxiety and stress. You expect the PM to stop or correct the palpitations. Is that correct?

At least you want an explanation for the palpitations.

Selwyn wrote a long comment about palpitations. It was rather complicated, I think. At least for you.

Let me simplify his discussion:
1) There are many kinds of palpitations.
2) Some make the heart beat faster.
3) Some make it beat slower.
4) Some make it beat at its regular rate, but it skips some beats.
5) The PM cannot correct beats faster than normal. It can only correct for beats that will be slower than normal, or will be missing altogether.
6) Palpitations are NOT always present. They come and go.
7) Many things can cause them to start - like a fever or some other sickness.
8) Palpitations can be started by fear, anxiety or stress.
9) If you get palpitations from a fever, the fear, anxiety and stress can make them feel even worse.
10) Most of the time, no one can tell you what causes the palpitations. They just start and stop and no one ever knows why.

So far in your posts, you have had three events happen that caused you fear, anxiety and stress.
1) The new PM put in caused you to ask about lead life.
2) The electric shocks you mentioned in a post when you asked about them draining your battery.
3) The fever you just reported.

It is a normal human reaction to such events to have fear, anxiety and stress. For a person who does not have a PM, it goes away very quickly after your life returns to normal.

For a person with a PM, it MAY take longer for the fear, anxiety and stress to go away because of the unknown effect on the PM. This, also, is perfectly normal.

The effects of fear, anxiety and stress get worse if you have too many bad things happen to you.

It sounds like your heart has some palpitations without any outside cause. They just happen at random times. Or, perhaps, they have a cause, called a trigger, that you do not know about. These palpitations are worst for you because when they happen, you do not know why and you suddenly have all the normal fear, anxiety and stress because you do not know if they are dangerous to your heart.

This is a problem that a lot of members of this site have. You are not alone.

You have an intermittent CHB (Complete Heart Block). This means that you do not have the block all the time. You said that your upper chamber (Atria) was paced 37% of the time and your lower chamber (Ventricles) were paced 64 % of the time. Earlier you asked if this is normal. Normal is the wrong word to describe this. It is common, meaning a lot of people have this happen.

Yes, an intermittent CHB is common. It is called intermittent because the Ventricles are only blocked 64 % of the time. This condition is called complete because the signal to beat is blocked and never gets to the ventricles at all. The PM takes over and makes the ventricles beat.

My first conclusion: You really do have palpitations. you do not imagine them.

My second conclusion: You react normally to them because they have unknown causes. Your reaction is fear, anxiety and stress.

My third conclusion: the fear, anxiety and stress make them feel worse than they are. This is normal.

My fourth conclusion: I do not know exactly what kind of palpitation you have, so I cannot answer your questions.

Do you have a copy of the print out from your Dr? If so, it may tell us what the palpitations are.

Thanks for the time!

School and PM informatiuon

by donr - 2015-02-02 08:02:45

Bally: Two questions:

1) What are you studying in school? My guess is that it is something in the science or engineering field, based on some of the words you use.

2) I once had a Medtronic Kappa 900 PM, so I am familiar w/ the interrogation format. I want to ask you a series of questions based on a copy of my PM interrogation report. I will tell you where to look in the report for the data I want. Is your copy a long strip of paper about 100 mm wide and very long, folded in a "Fan" about every 152 mm? Does it print out in English or Hindi (I think that's what your native language is called.) Is each 100 X 152 mm section numbered?

3) To determine if our reports are organized the same, tell me if your individual sections (Pages) have the following titles (Headings):
Page 1 - Pacemaker Status
Page 2 - Battery Status (At top), Lead Summary (Below)
Page 3 - Parameter Summary
Page 4 - Clinical Status (With a pair of Histograms for Atrial and Ventricular)
Page 5 - This is a continuation of Page 4, with more Clinical Status Data
Page 6 - Pacing % and Event Counters
Page 7 - Arrhythmia Summary
Page 8 - V. Rate during Atrial Arrhythmias (V = Ventricular) and Atrial Arrhythmias
Page 9 - Cardiac Compass
Page 10, 11, 12 - A group of tables giving settings for many parameters.

If your report is organized differently, please tell me how it is organized.

For right now, please find the sections on my Page 6 named "Pacing %" and "Event Counters."

Tell me what each of those sections say. That will tell me what I need to know to answer some of your questions.

We can communicate easily. I just sent you a Private Message. Please respond to it quickly, it will help me out a lot with answers for you.

To save me time & research, what time is it right now where you live? For me it is 9:18 AM. My day is just starting. I know that it is probably 8-10 hours different for you.
