weight loss

Hi Guys,
I had a pacemaker implanted about 3 months ago and have lost about 15 pounds since then. I am eating the same amount as before. Is this because they have increased my pulse rate and i am burning calories faster?
Thanks!

I got the wrong one!! I want the kind you got ;o)

If you are feeling better and moving more, doing more, then you are burning more calories without realizing it. I'm going to ditto the other suggestions, tho, get checked out to make sure nothing else is going on.

There was a post here asking if PMs caused weight gain

My answer would be that no, PMs don't cause weight changes directly, but... weight gain could be caused by anxiety and stress eating, among other things. Weight loss could be caused by a new subconscious awareness of your health, among other things. Ian had a pretty good list there. If you're aware of it, feeling good, and are not underweight to begin with, you might simply try to be more conscious about changes you may have made, and yes, if you're worried, bring it up with a doctor who listens. You'll probably lose another 5 lbs trying to find one.

If you are eating the same amount and not exercising more then a weight loss of 15 lbs is interesting :-

- a higher pulse rate would burn off more calories but 15lbs sounds a lot of calories to me. Questions that come to mind are :-

- Is your weighing machine faulty ?

- Are you exercising more since you had a PM, but not realising it , running upstairs instead of walking etc ?

- Do you feel good ?

Body weight can fluctuate and stress can lead to weight loss but Drs are sometimes concerned if weight loss of more than 5 % of bodyweight occurs over a few months when it is unintentional i.e no diets, no increase in exercise levels.

There are a stack of medical conditions which can lead to weight loss ( over-active thyroid to name just one ! )
so, if you are concerned about it, see your Dr.

If you are delighted by it, celebrate !

Best wishes

Ian

if you have not been picking up on the amount of activity you were doing prior to PM. If i were you i would contact my doctor about it, 15 LBS is a lot for 3 mounts if not dieting or increasing exercise for for the loss.

Weight Loss

I had a PM put in about a year ago after I passed out while driving and hit a house. Since then, I've lost almost 40 lbs. I've been thinking about writing a weight loss book that starts with "Step 1. Hit a house", but I doubt anyone would want that advice.

Anyway, I never really associated the weight loss with the PM install, but come to think of it, I did lose about 15 lbs in a very short period of time (a few weeks) after the operation (well, there should be an 's' after that - the house was not happy that I hit it and it hit back pretty hard). I've attributed the loss to the joy of being in the hospital, the drugs they gave me for pain relief afterward (I had 9 broken ribs and a broken wrist too), and clean living since. But maybe......?

I did the same thing but discovered it was over active thyroid. Maybe get bloods checked. Thankfully there was no crashing into houses. Glad your ok but sounds nasty for you

Hi Stephanie. I posted once about weight loss too, but mine was in the months before my pacemaker. Lost 50 lbs. Everyone noticed it and I thought it was because I stopped drinking Kool-Aid and started drinking Ocean Spray drinks. (ikr) Like someone commented maybe I just wasn't feeling well and my eating habits had changed. Had my pacemaker since May and have picked about 20 lbs. back up.

Thanks!

Thank you all for the helpful comments. Really love this site. I think it boils down to stress and anxiety. I was just curious as to whether the PM was a direct result of this.

Yesterday was my first day mountain biking after my implant. I wiped out several times and everything is fine. There are sports after pacemakers!
