climbing ladders

Will get a PM fitted in 2 weeks time
Does anyone have an indication about a full recovery time with respect to my profession as a seafarer which occasionally might involve climbing a rope ladder joining or leaving a vessel.

Recommendations from my Doc

by stricsm - 2014-08-30 07:08:07

My doc has told me not to lift my left arm over my shoulder for 6 weeks or pull/pick-up more than 10lbs. So, I can't climb a ladder for 5 more weeks (mine was implanted on 8/20/2014). Your doctor's recommendations may be different, but I doubt by much.

Building strength

I climb rope ladders and found it was months before I could do so properly. I didn't exercise my upper body enough after the six weeks. I would suggest some light weights and build yourself up.

Don't overdo it

My advice is to stick to what the doctor tells you during the recovery period. I was told 6 weeks before I could swing a golf club or lift heavy objects and so that was what I did. Eventually though you should be able to do everything you did before, like climb ladders. I eventually returned to scuba diving, hiking and mountain biking. The thing I do watch is not to hurt the area or wound, and I don't carry objects on my left shoulder (like laptop briefcases, etc) My logic is to protect the wires at all cost, as replacing a wire is the highest risk procedure you can have once you have an implant.
I'm scheduled for a new unit (battery) next week so I guess I'll find out what condition the wires are in when they test them while the unit is out.
All the best

6 weeks till recovery

Don't use your left arm at all. Ranges of motion can dislodge the leads until such time as scar tissue can grow around the leads. 6 weeks is a standard recovery time.

You know you're wired when...

Your life has spark.
