Finally getting a Pacemaker

I received my first pacemaker 8 days ago; it’s a Boston Scientific dual. After not feeling well for past 6 months, first having shortest of breath while running and being fatigued, to lately be fatigued all the time and easily short of breath. Seeing one Cardiologist twice and both times told there was nothing wrong with my heart, having 3 stress tests and told they were normal. Seeing another cardiologist, who had me wear a heart monitor for 48 hours and getting an appointment with a specialist cardiologist within 4 days. Then told I had a heart block, the electrical signal was not always get to the heart and would probably need a pacemaker. Not feeling well this past weekend, very tired and no energy, going to Emergency, walking in with a pulse of 45 and brought into the Cardiac Emergency, told 3 hours later that I was sable enough to probably go home. Having to convicting them I needed to stay, being admitted to the Cardiac Unit, having the nurse manually check my pause, noticing 3 pauses in a minute and told I would probably get a pacemaker. Moved the next afternoon to another room because my condition was stable enough and someone else needed my bed. Being waken up 3 times within 4 hours that night by the nurses to check my blood pressure because my pulse was very low, 28 bpm with up to 8 second pauses. Moved to Cardiac ICU, put on a wish list for a pacemaker, asked multiple times if I was dizzy, light-headed or had shortness of breath, which I wasn't. Finally getting a pacemaker, what a different that made on the heart monitor, no more pauses, or pulse dropping to 22 bpm while awake. I came home the next day, feeling good other than sore where the pacemaker was inserted. Can’t wait to start cycling and running again.

I was passing out, so I was given every heart test and they were all fine. They finally hooked me up to a halter monitor and on the second day, my heart stopped beating for 5 seconds. I got PM on 7/24/14. I am so tired various times of the day. I want to get my energy back. It's been a month. I used to jog everyday and for now, I am walking, but I seem to get tired easily. I never nap and never did before. I hate sitting down. I like to keep doing things, but it seems to be hard. I want to mow my lawn and get back to my active routine, but I need the energy. How long does it take? They told me that I was jumping around unvoluntarily, so they had to give me more anesthesia.

Thanks for any advice or comments.
Betty

I feel your frustration! I knew too that there was something wrong for about 6 or 7 months but they couldn't really find out anything. In Jan I was at work and the whole top half of me went tingly! long story short 5 hrs in ER all they could come up with was Vertigo and skin ephasia --fortunately when I saw my primary doc a couple of days later he didn't buy it. listened to my heart and sent me back to my EP wore a monitor for 30 days went back to see him on a Friday and Monday had PM! A huge difference to say the least. I didn't have heart block like you but SSS and Afib. Glad you found us and now have the PM and glad you are feeling better. there are others here that have had issues like you too. Ask any questions you may have. You can put ice on your incision to help with pain and swelling. it helps for a lot of folks.

It seems like every day there is someone joining due to getting a surprise PM. Me too. I joined just over a year ago. Was fine, fairly healthy and active, but no athlete. Then wham, getting SOB and legs like lead, with 50% AV block. In about 3 weeks got a PM installed and had 100% AV block. Otherwise heart and plumbing is excellent, just an electrical problem. Don't know what caused it and will never know. I've accepted that though it was hard. I'm a retired engineer and when there's a failure you must find root cause. Oh well, you have to move on.

Sounds like you've got a good attitude towards your new little buddy, that's huge. If you only have heart block then the PM you got is made to fix that. Give yourself time to heal and your body and mind to adjust, then just get back to living your life.

lots of us

Got mine on 8/20/2014. Hadn't felt good for 2 years. Had a multitude of tests run by a multitude of doctors. They found stomach inflammation, anemia, and chronic lymphocytic leukemia on me, but not my heart problem until last week. I thought my fatigue/shortness of breath was from the leukemia but now know that it was my heart. My fatigue is all but gone and I feel so much better. My wife is having a hard time keeping up with me now. I'm 53 and now feel like 40. The cardiologist said I probably felt like 73 before the pacemaker and he was right.

You may want to post your comment above. That way folks scanning the posts will see it and have an opportunity to reply.

It also helps to let us know why you got your PM. Your heart paused but was it due to AV block or a problem with your sinus node? They usually send you out with average settings and they sometimes need tweaking for more active people.

Get a copy of your PM report. It has all your settings on it. Then you can ask questions here.

After a month I'd expect that you'd be getting back to your normal activities, though maybe slow at first.

Keep asking questions and work with your PM team to get your settings optimized for you.
